Library Deserves Full Funding

Editor, News-Register: Save the library! David Croft may not think the Ohio County Public Library is important enough for full funding but I do. The Ohio County Public Library is vital to many people as a resource. Book information does not change from day to day like Wikipedia and internet sources. I attended several of the library’s meetings — “Women Pilots,” for example — plus I had my taxes done in the basement until they became just too complex. Just as surely as Wheeling needs Wheeling Health Right and the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling, we need a fully funded ...

Ohio County Library a Treasure

Editor, News-Register: Recent actions of the Ohio County Board of Education that will result in a 33% reduction ($294,849) of annual revenue to the Ohio County Public Library should give all citizens of the county cause for alarm. Too frequently, funding of libraries is considered an add-on or frill by those who control access to revenue. The Ohio County Public Library was originally conceived as a child of the Wheeling Public School system. A mechanism to fund the county-based library was created by a special law requested by the Board of Education — at the time, and for ...

Appreciation for Easter Parade

Editor, News-Register: I want to give a big ‘Thank you’ to the Benwood Volunteer Fire Department for a beautiful Easter parade, it was great. Five of our grand babies were here to see the parade. They were so excited, along with the five adults. They even tossed candy to the kids which made it even more exciting. What a beautiful evening with the grand babies and the adults. Name Changing With the Times

Editor, News-Register: As a life-long fan of the Cleveland Indians Major League Baseball franchise, I do admit that I agree with the recent decision to change the team’s name from “Indians,” which has been the team’s moniker since the 1915 season, and therefore has been such for over a century since, but will be reportedly dropped following the 2021 season. The decision, which was made and announced by team owner Paul Dolan, who has served in that capacity since 2000, is reportedly fully supported by the team’s field manager, Terry Francona, players, coaches as well as ...

Dealing With Lifetime of Bigotry

Editor, News-Register: Bigotry is defined as “obstinate or unreasonable attachment to a belief, opinion, or faction; in particular, prejudice against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group.” “Bigotry” seems to me, as I have encountered it in my travels, is hatred of people that are different in terms of race (color), religion, language, or sexual orientation. I know bigotry when I see it, but I don’t understand it. I remember seeing bigotry when my grade school chum told me of his visit to relatives down South that “you could just ...

Glad to Know Late Ramsey Clark

Editor, News-Register: I was sued for $2 million by a Teamster Lawyer that was representing the Oneida County, NY Deputy Sheriff’s Union. (I had said “I don’t like the cops reporting to the robbers.”) They sued for two million, instead of one, because the county only carried one million in defamation insurance on the County Executive. Since I was potentially on the hook for a million dollars, I needed to find a lawyer to defend me, so I trotted down to Manhattan and sought to retain Ramsey Clark as my personal attorney. I was enthralled with Ramsey’s civil rights work ...
