Lawrences Made A Real Impact

In a short period of time, Lt. John Lawrence and Lt. Candace Lawrence made their impact known in the Ohio Valley with the Salvation Army in Wheeling. The couple arrived in the Friendly City in June 2023, and they’ll depart for a new appointment in Annapolis, Maryland this coming June. In those three years, they moved quickly and effectively to make the Ohio Valley a better place to live. On top of the Christmas toy drives and Red Kettle campaigns, the Lawrences increased and improved the Salvation Army’s presence in the area. The organization opened a service center in Moundsville ...

Boosting Behavioral Health

Society has given teachers increasingly greater responsibility for our children over the past decade or two — in loco parentis truly means, teaching, feeding, clothing, keeping safe and healthy, and protecting — all with the expectation these teachers will also help students keep up with ever-changing educational standards, too. But teachers have kept adjusting. After all, they do their jobs because they care about students’ wellbeing on more than an academic level. A recent partnership between University Hospitals and the Willoughby-Eastlake school district may give them ...

B&O Building Renovation Benefits Wheeling

For more than a century, the B&O Building has stood in Wheeling, first as a center of travel, now as a center of education. It’s importance can’t be understated. And it’s importance was made evident Tuesday with the rededication of the building on the campus of West Virginia Northern Community College. Both local and state officials, including Gov. Patrick Morrisey, were in attendance to celebrate more than $2 million in renovations to the historic structure. “This building represents more than just bricks and mortar,” WVNCC President Daniel Mosser said to the assembled ...

Last week’s National Apprenticeship Week gave employers, apprentices, graduates, industry representatives, labor organizations, community organizations, educational institutions — even government agencies — a chance to highlight the importance of training programs that help develop a skilled workforce. The demand for such well-trained and skilled workers is only growing. Now, as the attention of many students and families in our region turns to high school graduation — and what comes next — it is important to use that knowledge to inform the decision-making process. Each ...

Stay Calm And Vigilant Dealing With Scammers

Decent people are assaulted regularly by scammers attempting to gain their personal information, their money, and usually, both. A new round of scam attempts has taken things up a notch by including the state seal of West Virginia in its attempt. Law abiding citizens are used to being able to believe that if something comes with that kind of official imagery, they should pay attention. And because they ARE the kinds of people who want to do the right thing, they are more likely to fall for attempts by those who would prey on their sense of responsibility by using state seals, bank logos ...

Congratulations To Local WVU Foundation Scholars

The Foundation Scholarship is the most prestigious the university awards to incoming freshmen each year. Valued at more than $100,000 total, the Foundation Scholarship covers college costs for four years of undergraduate studies, including tuition and fees, room and ...
