Is It Too Late for Country Club?

Editor, News-Register: To Marshall County, Area Golfers and Other Interested Parties, Do you know you have been on the brink of losing the Moundsville Country Club for several years now? Why hasn’t there been a bigger “hue and cry” over this possible loss? This is a beautiful asset to the county and it is in the judicial system awaiting judgement. Why have the current Board allowed the Club to decline? Why have they negated all ideas and suggestions for improvements and increases in membership? Why have various other offers to keep it a going concern been turned down? ...

Biden’s Excellent First 100 Days

Editor, News-Register: President Biden’s first 100 days is overall lauded for significant performance. Experts agree the three biggest achievements of Biden’s first 100 days have been the Covid-19 vaccination distribution, passage of his $1.9 trillion economic relief bill, and the rejoining of the Paris climate accord. I would add to the top three list a fourth major one: the elimination of Trump’s daily scandals and his crazy behavior. I am so happy that Biden trounced that fool, Trump. But I digress. While everyone is talking about Biden’s performance (and Trump’s ...

Good Food for a Good Cause

Editor, News-Register: On Sunday, May 15 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., the Wood Fired Pizza Company will be set up in the parking lot of Moundsville Pharmacy. A percentage of the sales from that day will be donated to Paws for a Cause, which is an organization that helps students in need at John Marshall High School. They provide food, clothing, toiletries, etc. to students at JM, all free of charge. We’d love to get this information out there to the public to hopefully generate more support for the cause and also support local businesses. Thank you for your time. David ...

Update Public on Bond Projects

Editor, News-Register: I write this letter in response to the excellent editorial in the last Sunday edition of the News-Register entitled “Don’t Defund the Public Library.” The editorial essentially asked the question as to how the school bond projects are in such a state of financial mismanagement that library funding has to be cut by over $350,000 to prop up $72 million worth of projects. The editorial appropriately ponders what has Ohio County Schools done to analyze its own finances when it has an annual operating budget of over $67 million, when the voters approved over ...

Working to Clean Up Wheeling

Editor, News-Register: I want to take a moment to thank The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register for all of the support, encouragement, and public awareness that you have provided for not only the Wheeling Island Cleanup, but all of the numerous neighborhood cleanup projects that have taken place recently. I can’t begin to even express how exciting it is to see so many community leaders and organizations stepping up to the plate with armies of volunteers to make our community a better place. I believe you said it best when you recently said it “takes a community” (and an ...

Don’t Diminish Public Library

Editor, News-Register: I was so very sorry and surprised to read that the local school board voted to reduce the allocation to the Ohio County Public Library. As a historian, I researched the situation, only to learn that this is the first time in 139 years that a school board has felt the need to go after library funding. I believe our library is one of the jewels of local life. I often use the Wheeling Room staffed by well-known genealogist Diane Rhodes and am proud that out-of-town researchers often praise our setup and helpful spirit. The fairly recent addition of the Wheeling ...
