Real Changed Needed in W.Va.

Editor, News-Register: I am writing to share a heavy heart, as a young, born-and-raised in Moundsville, West Virginia teacher who now finds it necessary to leave the Mountain State. I took great pride to attend West Virginia University and John Marshall High, proud to call myself a Mountaineer, and honored to serve my state as an educator in public schools for four years. It was my ultimate goal to give back to the state through education. My intention was to use my talents to be a part of educating and remove ignorance. Schools exist to build a nation. Teachers are nation ...

Explain Stone Bridge Change

Editor, News-Register: I find it very interesting that the 18-month-long traffic disruption, scheduled for the Elm Grove Stone Bridge, has suddenly changed. According to the engineer I saw on TV, the completion date for the bridge repairs will be the same and they will begin the job by working beneath the road surface. I would love to hear the explanation as to why this wasn’t their original plan and what was the reason that the bridge was going to be closed for a year longer than actually necessary? Obviously, the public needs to pay more attention to these major road ...

Make ‘Smart’ Choice on Library

Editor, News-Register: To my friends on the Board of Education: As you may know, Wheeling is one of the few cities of its size in the country that does not have a Carnegie Library. The citizens of Wheeling declined the offer of a Carnegie Library. The thinking of that time was, “We don’t need no dang library. We is plenty smart ... as we is.” Thank you for preserving that level of thought. During my years as a member and president of the Ohio County Board of Education, I cannot recall even a hint of hesitancy when it came time to provide funds to the Ohio County Public ...

The Grass Not Always Greener

Editor, News-Register: Many people believe that the grass is always greener on the other side. That is not always true. Consider the case of the two women who left West Virginia hoping to find greener pastures. One moved to St. Petersburg, Florida while the other moved to Oakland, California. They were featured in the Wheeling newspapers on Monday, May 24th in a story titled, “West Virginia lost bigger share of population than any state.” Let’s compare some average statistics of West Virginia compared to these two cities. Apartment rental average in West Virginia for ...

Restore Library’s Full Funding

Editor, News-Register: The editorial in the Sunday (May 2) News Register titled “Don’t Defund the Public Library” is spot on. The Board Members that voted in favor of this move are absolutely wrong. The amount (approximately $300,000) that will be reduced from the Library funding is “chump change” (definition — “a small or insignificant amount of money”) in regards to the millions of dollars that the Ohio County school board is spending on building and recreational facilities. It is a meaningful amount in the eyes of the library and will seriously impact the ...

Wrong Decision on Library

Editor, News-Register The recent decision by the Ohio County Board of Education to drastically cut funding for the Ohio County Public Library is short-sighted and ill-advised. If these cuts are allowed to happen the negative impact on the community will be felt for years to come. Ironically, the population most to suffer will be the very children the Board of Education is mandated to serve. Should it be discovered money taken from our revered library is to go to the building of additional athletic facilities then recent statements by the board’s leadership must be seen as ...
