Putting Our Country Above Self

Editor, News-Register: President Biden has proposed forgiving student loans. What about the ones who worked and sacrificed to pay theirs back? Will they get money refunded and how about future borrowers, will they get free money? Come on, quit playing favorites in order to get a few votes. Also , what a mess on the border. Will we ever get out of this mess? This man seems to be half asleep or out in space most of the time. Why does mainstream media keep covering up for him? It seems the only network willing to tell truth about him is Fox. If this was Trump or any other Republican, ...

Government Seeks More Control

Editor, News-Register: Parents, please be aware! Wheeling City Council had the first reading of a city ordinance to restrict parent’s right to direct their own child’s counseling for gender identity! I attended the Tuesday (April 19) meeting where four people, including me, spoke on an Amendment to City Ordinance 169 that gives the Human Rights Commission more authority in our city. Remember these people (HRC members) are appointed not elected, with the exception of Rosemary Ketchum, therefore they are not accountable for decisions that they make and impose on voters! The ...

Thank You For Your Support

Editor, News-Register: The United Mine Workers of America recently held a memorial service at the Willow Grove Mine site in Neffs, Ohio, to honor 72 miners who lost their lives in an explosion on March 16, 1940. On behalf of the UMWA I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to all who supported us in making the event possible. We also want to thank Ed DiOrio of WTOV-TV news and Ashley Kaiser of WTRF-TV news for covering the service and giving those who were unable to attend a way to remember what happened that tragic day. Rick Altman, Vice President UMWA District 31 Sub 6

Standing Strong for Democracy

Editor, News-Register: This has bothered me for some time now and I can’t be silent any longer. As I read the weekend newspaper, I no longer see “The Right” and “The Left” opinion sections. I realize we are a red state, but I have been seeing, overwhelmingly, a host of Republican, anti-Biden, pro-Trump articles. Even last week, one of the commentators seemed to be defending Putin, saying “he’s not a war criminal.” I see those saying “If Trump was still president, we wouldn’t have this war in Ukraine.” I doubt that but it surely would jeopardize our democracy all ...

The Gipper’s Empty Tan Suit

Editor, News-Register: Our 40th President, Ronald Wilson Reagan, was all teeth, no cattle. As Ronnie bravely waged outright war on the (phony) multitudes of “welfare queens” with his mesmerizing smile, the United States became mired in deep, unyielding poverty, debt, and great wealth for the privileged upper class. What a record!? Then why should anyone honor this “war hero” who sat out World War II on a Hollywood movie set and lied that he was involved in the liberation of Nazi death camps, or how shamelessly he adopted, from a movie role, Notre Dame football great ...

Stopping the Monsters Among Us

Editor, News-Register: When I reflect on Russia’s slaughter in the Ukraine, I ask myself why is Russia doing this? And why is the so-called West sanctimonious about this latest war? The Russian’s can certainly make a case for their homeland defense. After all, Russia was invaded by Napoleon in the 19th century, attacked by Germany (and Austria-Hungary) in the First World War, and attacked by Nazi Germany in the Second World War. (The Nazis killed about 30 million people in Russia in WWII.) You would think this history would make the Russian people to fervently embrace ...
