Standing Strong for Democracy

Editor, News-Register:

This has bothered me for some time now and I can't be silent any longer. As I read the weekend newspaper, I no longer see "The Right" and "The Left" opinion sections. I realize we are a red state, but I have been seeing, overwhelmingly, a host of Republican, anti-Biden, pro-Trump articles. Even last week, one of the commentators seemed to be defending Putin, saying "he's not a war criminal." I see those saying "If Trump was still president, we wouldn't have this war in Ukraine." I doubt that but it surely would jeopardize our democracy all over the world. Trump wanted to pull us out of NATO (as Putin would love), he praised Putin and took his word over our intelligence. We can't succumb to Putin's spell, as some of his followers have in Russia. They believe his words, even though he has expelled all existing news stations except one in which he lies and uses propaganda to control them, like the dictator he is. Putin doesn't care about the Ukrainians he's displaced and had killed.

This reminds me of the minority here in the U.S. who still believe in Trump when they have seen how he is being investigated for inciting a riot to overturn our government. He's also being investigated for many corrupt business deals and campaign improprieties. He called several governors trying to persuade them to "find votes" and harassed his own VP to change the outcome of the election. Is this not what "stealing an election" really is? Is this what we want, a dictatorship? Do people not see the correlation? Do they not see the nonsense of QAnon, which spewed immense lies and propaganda? Do they not see the similarities in Trump saying "the press is the enemy?"

I cringe to think of where we might be if Trump would have won a second term. Thank God democracy won.
