A Yes for Amendment 2

Editor, News-Register: I understand how government works. We pay taxes so the government can provide us with services we need, such as public safety. But since West Virginia’s population keeps decreasing, shouldn’t the government need less money from us to provide those services since it’s for fewer people? You would think that is the case, but costs do go up. So here are your options. Oppose Amendment 2 and vote to pay more and more taxes in the future since we already know fewer will be paying for government services. Or, do the smart thing and vote for Amendment 2. ...

Are We a Nation of Laws?

Editor, News-Register: When I read or hear that we are a nation of laws it’s all I can do to ignore. We have thousands of illegals crossing our border and being bussed, and given phones, money and whatever all at taxpayer expense. They are taken to other cities and being greeted like returning heroes instead of law breakers by gutless politicos offering handshakes. All the while our vice president is saying our border is secure. What country is she living in? Some states are relaxing laws regarding bail and turning criminals loose who are committing more violent crimes and ...

An Essential Industry

Editor, News-Register: The importance of the natural gas and oil industry has never been more evident. The war in Ukraine, inflation, and skyrocketing energy prices have demonstrated how essential the industry is to our daily lives. Nationwide, the industry is responsible for 5.6% of total U.S. employment and generates an enormous amount of economic benefits across the country. In Ohio, it provides 375,000 direct and 296,000 indirect jobs, supports over $24.7 billion in labor, and contributes $58.7 billion to our gross domestic product. However, our industry’s future is ...

WLU Board Has Not Done Duty

Editor, News-Register: The West Liberty University Board of Governors has been an inept steward of the university. They have moved with glacial speed to resolve a critical leadership problem, dismissed input from stakeholders, and failed to understand the importance of academic integrity. Academic integrity is a commitment to honesty, respect, trust, and responsibility in interactions between faculty, staff, and administrators. Dr. (W. Franklin) Evans is a veteran educator who should understand the need for academic integrity in senior level leaders. Yet, he plagiarized parts of his ...

Calling on Congress To Assist

Editor, News-Register: September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. As a volunteer advocate with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, I am calling upon my members of Congress to pass legislation to prevent suicides and support crisis care. Suicide is a leading cause of death. It is also the most preventable. But we can’t stop suicide alone. We check in with our family and friends when they are struggling. We provide an ear for listening, a shoulder for crying, and resources when we can. Sometimes, it is still not enough. We need Congress to help us ...

Don’t Fall for Police Propaganda

Editor, News-Register: Recently, the Wheeling Police Department released yet another press release celebrating their perceived accomplishments. And when framed the right way, the accolades will always pour in. Have you ever seen any other police department that celebrates crime allegedly committed by our most marginalized population? These aren’t the significant drug busts like you see just across the river. Thirty-four arrests, 32 listed, and all but a few were victimless crimes and active warrants — many of which for victimless crimes. Four hundred hours celebrated — or ...
