They Are Deserving of One Another

Editor, News-Register: The recent selection of JD Vance by former president and current 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump as his vice presidential running mate is most curious and somewhat troubling indeed. Senator Vance, who has only served in elected office for approximately one and one-half years, has been a well known national celebrity as a result of his authoring the best selling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which documents his personal ascent from what he has described as a dysfunctional working class family. In spite of what Vance has described as his ...

Time to Clean Interstate Drains

Editor, News-Register: The West Virginia Division of Highways built brand new bridges and ramps, and now look: every drain is plugged with dirt, and grass is growing alongside the interstate. With plugged drains you have ponding water, which causes hydroplaning and wrecks. All it would take is two nights a month, with a vac-truck, a dump truck and a few workers, and the DOH could clean all the ramps and bridges in and around Wheeling. It’s a shame it’s come to this so soon after the work that was completed. All the DOH big-shots should be fired. J. Myers Wheeling

The State of Retirement Savings

Editor, News-Register: As Labor Day is fast approaching it seemed like a good time to see where the candidates stand on retirement benefits for Americans. Former President Trump used to like to ask, “How’s your 401(k) doing?” But the answer for most Americans is, “What 401(k)?” Who will do more for retirement and working people on Social Security and Medicare? Trump has taken a more ambiguous stance on Social Security. During his presidency and recent campaign, he said he would protect Social Security benefits. Several news stories published during her 2020 bid for ...

Election Drawing Renewed Interest

Editor, News-Register: Kamala Harris is not just a political figure, she has become a cultural figure. Millions of teenage voters are learning about her. The voters between the ages of 18 and 34 who once felt they had no real choice given both presidential candidates were two old white men and out of touch with this generation are anticipating an election day where they feel that someone is running who believes in a future in which they can look forward. Don’t underestimate Gen Z and millennial voters. They helped elect Biden in 2020 and now that they have new hope with Kamala ...

Community Days Should Continue

Editor, News-Register: I attended this year’s Follansbee Community Days Festival as I have for most, if not all, of the 30 years it’s been in existence. I was saddened to hear that this year would be the last one. Since I’ve always been a fan of live music, I took advantage of seeing the many top-notch groups that came to provide entertainment each year. I was never disappointed. I don’t know the reasons behind the decision to discontinue this long-running event, but I’m sure it took an enormous amount of planning, financial backing and many behind-the-scene workers to make ...

Damaging the Nation

Editor, News-Register: Now that Joe Biden has dropped out of the election, God help us during the next six months as he is still serving as president. His policies have been a disaster. Democrat leaders have communicated that the only reason they wanted Biden to drop out was that he couldn’t win. No matter who the Democrats pick to run for president, the failed policies of Biden will continue if the presidency is won by a Democrat. These policies include DEI, poor economy, abortion, open borders, crime and climate change. We recently saw the results of the DEI policies ...
