Levy Passage Lauded by Several Belmont County Officials

Editor, News-Register: To all Belmont County Residents, On behalf of the Belmont County Department of Job and Family Services, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude for your recent support of the 0.45 mill replacement with a reduction children services levy passage in the November 5, 2024, general election. The passage of this levy will allow a reduction in the property taxes paid to support the operations of children services by reducing the millage from 0.65 to 0.45 and by allowing the retirement of our 0.35 mill levy when it expires on December 31, 2025. It is an ...

Vote No on Amendment 1

Editor, News-Register: My submission is in regard to Pat McGeehan’s commentary of October 27th to the News Register. I feel his article is misleading and plays on fear, not rational thinking. Amendment One is a danger to every health care worker in the state of WV. Amendment One is a vote of no confidence for those dedicated caregivers who provide help and comfort to patients. No one works in health care to harm people. Who are these doctors referred to as prescribing “suicide pills”? What are these pills? I have never heard of them. Where is the pharmacy who fills this ...

A Great Individual

Editor, News-Register: Recently, I had the distinct privilege to chat with one of Wheeling’s finest individuals, Tom “Bear” Bechtel. I was attending my two youngest granddaughters’ softball game (eight years of age and younger) at the I-470 ballfields. Tom and I have known one another for nearly 50 years and when I noticed he had stopped by to watch an inning or two, I immediately walked up to him and we started talking about softball, basketball, football and the world in general. I introduced Tom to my two oldest granddaughters, ages 12 and 10. Tom spoke with them as if he ...

Consolidation Is the Right Move

Editor, News-Register: I would like to publicly thank Wetzel County education Superintendent Cassandra Porter for coming into our county and tackling a problem that should have been tackled years ago. Everyone in this county has known for years that the education our kids are receiving in this county is not as good as it should be. Test results have always shown that most students are not up to grade level proficiency in the important core subjects of English, Math and Science. Recently revealed test results show that 11th graders in this county are far behind knowing what they should ...

A Magical Place in City’s History

Editor, News-Register: I may be the only person in Wheeling who will miss the Ihlenfeld Dining Room at Oglebay. It was the only place in Wheeling that served as a reminder of what a beautiful dining experience could be like. Jackets were required for the men, nice dresses and the like for the women. There were no shorts, no flip-flops, and no ball caps. I considered it a very romantic place for special times and occasions to remember. The table settings were one of a kind, the pictures, wallpaper were just perfect. Thank you to the Ihlenfeld family for giving so many good ...

Standing Tall for What is Right

Editor, News-Register: Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 23 years ago, was one of the saddest, most horrific days in our country’s history — probably since Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. A total of 2,977 people died in the plane crashes that day as a result of the men who came here, haters of America. But that’s not the total casualty list. Did you know that more than 6,343 of the public and first responders have died as a result of their exposure to dust and poisonous vapors, which also would have included those in the Twin Towers and the residents of surrounding areas in Manhattan? ...
