From Staff Reports Republicans retained control of the West Virginia Legislature in Tuesday’s election, scoring House and Senate wins even as their candidate for governor was going down to defeat. Delegate Ryan Weld, R-Brooke, will move to the upper chamber of the state Capitol in January, as voters elected him to represent West Virginia’s 1st Senate District, unofficial results showed late Tuesday. “I am truly overwhelmed by this,” Weld said while celebrating. “It is just such a relief to see that the work that my wife and I put into all of this has culminated in this victory.” Preliminary results late Tuesday showed Weld with 21,056 votes, while incumbent Sen. Delegates Pat McGeehan, R-Hancock, and Mark Zatezalo, R-Hancock, will retain their seats in the West Virginia Legislature on the decision of voters in Hancock and Brooke counties. Both were elected in 2014, although McGeehan served a term in the House previously, from 2008-10. The pair ran against challenger Ronnie Jones, a Democrat.
