Dear Marc Rowan, Et Al …

Marc Rowan is the chairman of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also my boss’ boss’ boss’ boss’ boss or something like that. The radio company I work for is owned by Apollo Global Management, and Rowan is the CEO of that parent company. The University of Pennsylvania has pushed Rowan to resign his chairmanship because Rowan does not like how the university has handled the rise of antisemitism on campus. He and other donors are unwilling to write large checks to a school that polices microaggressions but lets students call for eliminating ...

Gun Cultures Need Gun Laws, Too

Rep. Jared Golden’s about-face on gun laws is not surprising. He is a Democrat representing Lewiston, Maine, still convulsed by a mass shooting that took 18 lives. Formerly against tightening the laws, Golden now wants a ban on semiautomatic weapons. One can understand why elected officials in rural areas, even in generally liberal states, would put forth the argument that guns really aren’t a problem. Maine, after all, is a low-crime place. Its murder rate is fourth-lowest in the nation, despite a strong gun culture. Many Mainers rely on firearms to hunt for dinner. Vermont, ...

Here’s How You Can Talk Turkey With a Budding Vegetarian

With Halloween jack-o’-lanterns starting to mold and my 5-year-old’s “cool-looking” leaf collection growing, all signs point to us being on the mudslide toward the holidays. By DEE-ANN DURBIN AP Business Writer Spooked by the high price of Halloween candy? There’s not much relief in sight. For the second year in a row, U.S. shoppers are seeing double-digit inflation in the candy aisle. Candy and gum prices are up an average of 13% this month compared to last October, more than double the 6% increase in all grocery prices, according to Datasembly, a retail price tracker. That’s on top of a 14% increase in candy and gum prices in October 2022. “The price of candy has gotten to be outrageous,” said Jessica Weathers, a small business owner in ...
