5 min read

WHEELING -- The Woman's Club of Wheeling will be meeting on 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, and 1 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Monument Place in Wheeling with President Liz McKee presiding.

In honor of Veterans' Day on Nov. 11, members are encouraged to acknowledge family, friends and others who are veterans and offer their support and thanks.

The members of The Woman's Club of Wheeling extend our gratitude and appreciation to those men and women who have served and are serving our country. We honor these veterans who have fought and continue to fight in our armed forces. They are our heroes. Our club will be participating in the Wreaths Across America national initiative placing wreaths on the graves of veterans across the country. We will visit the Riverview Cemetery in Marshall County at noon on Dec. 16, and following a ceremony volunteers will place the wreaths on the graves. Members will purchase a wreath to donate for this purpose.

President McKee thanks the people and groups in the community who generously donated needed food items and money to help reduce hunger and food insecurity in the Ohio Valley. Special thanks to Riesbeck's and Family Dollar in Elm Grove and the Ohio County Public Library for allowing us to collect donations in September supporting the General Federation of Women's Clubs National Day of Service initiative. We collected $2,182 and 1,035 food items which were delivered to Neighbors Helping Neighbors, the Bethlehem Apostolic Temple, The Soup Kitchen and Catholic Charities in October. Our members were happy to have been a part of this worthwhile project.

On Nov. 3, Pat Jordan will perform after the meeting. Pat is a professional actor, playwright and director whose passion for history has led her to bring the stories of Famous American Women to appreciative audiences throughout the country. Pat's characters are thoroughly researched and include 18th, 19th and 20th Century women such as Clara Barton, Louisa May Alcott, Amelia Earhart and suffragist leader Carrie Chapman Catt, founder of the League of Women Voters, among others.

Her work for American Historical Theatre includes appearances as a public scholar for the New Jersey Council for the Humanities and performances at venues such as the National Archives in Washington D.C., Truman Library, Smithsonian Institution and the White House Visitors' Center, along with libraries, schools and local organizations.

Characters portrayed by Pat Jordan include Amelia Earhart, Mary Todd Lincoln, Martha Washington, Louisa May Alcott, Clara Barton, Dorothea Dix and Carrie Chapman Catt.

On Nov. 17, American Pride -- A Tribute to the Statler Brothers, will perform after the meeting. You will relive the musical memories of The Statler Brothers through American Pride. They have captured the true authenticity of The Statler Brothers sound, keeping the legacy alive and promoting traditional Country Music, which is generational, yet crosses age boundaries.

Just as The Statler Brothers had two members who are actually brothers, Harold and Don Reid, so does American Pride, as Mike and Jimmy Whetsel are also brothers. Both the Reid brothers and the Whetsel brothers have a life-long love for Southern Gospel quartet music, and still find that audiences at all venues cannot help but clap their hands and pat their feet to "I'll Fly Away" or "Heaven's Jubilee." American Pride group members are Bill Tomlinson, Mike Whetsel, Jimmy Whetsel and Jamie Lambert. Each are honored to represent the legendary heritage of The Statler Brothers.

A Fall Style Show Fundraising Luncheon will be held on Friday, Nov. 10, at Undo's Event Center in Elm Grove at noon. Some of our members will be modeling clothing from JCPenney. A basket raffle and a 50/50 raffle will be included. The cost for a reservation is $30 for lunch to include chicken, rigatoni, salad, green beans, Undo's bread and sherbet.

This event is open to the public. If interested in attending, please contact Vicki Jo Smith at 740-310-4454 by Nov. 3 to make a reservation.

The first book review of the 2023-24 club year for the Woman's Club of Wheeling will be presented at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, at the Monument Place. Nancy Ellen Rice O'Leary will review "Great Dames" by Marie Brenner. This is a look at the lives of well-known women of distinction who influenced the times in which they lived and left their mark on history as well. O'Leary is a past president of the Woman's Club of Wheeling, and this will be the 12th review she has given for the club. She is a retired teacher of Ohio County Schools.

The Woman's Club of Wheeling is a volunteer service organization admitted to the GFWC West Virginia federation in 1911 and to GFWC in 1913. Twelve new members were initiated in September and the current membership total is 126. New members are invited to join throughout the year.
