Put on a Mask

Editor, News-Register: Until Covid, I’d always believed that people are innately good, kind, caring and generous. I’m being disavowed of this belief by the behavior of people during the pandemic. It’s astounding how many people won’t wear masks. They’re incredibly selfish. It’s all about them. They don’t care about another human being. I’m not shy about confronting non-mask wearers. Some encounters have gotten ugly. I’ve heard all of their lame excuses. They complain that masks make them hot, or sweaty, or steam up their glasses. Well, guess what? Me ...

It’s All Propaganda

Editor, News-Register: If you have watched Trump’s press conferences, you might have noticed Trump is very kind to the One America News Network reporter. One America News Network was started by multi-millionaire Robert Herring in 2013 after Mr. Herring got his third wife in Russia. Herring dictates what news is reported on OANN and insists on stories that are pro-Trump and pro-Russia and won’t allow reporting of news stories that are critical of Trump. I learned of this network from a family member who is a Trump supporter. This person is elderly and lives in a rural ...

Bomb Not Necessary

Editor, News-Register: The United States is the only country to detonate nuclear weapons against an enemy. Seventy-five years ago on August 6 and 9, 1945, atomic bombs (named “Little Boy” and “Fat Man”) were detonated by America on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan killing over 110,000 instantly and about 350,000 more by 1950 because of radiation sickness and cancer. On Aug. 14, 1945, Japan surrendered unconditionally, bringing an end to World War II. It has been debated endlessly whether America should have used atomic bombs to kill people to bring a sudden end of ...

Concern in W.Va., Too

Editor, News-Register: The day after the Ohio House of Representatives speaker was charged with taking bribes from First Energy corporation, several light bulbs went off in West Virginia. Yes, the same company that West Virginia granted a $125 million tax break to keep its Pleasants power station running. The Ohio bribery scam is clearly ongoing and will likely take down several more people before it’s over. What should irk all West Virginians is that First Energy came to see Governor Justice with their hand out wanting a tax break while at the same time “bags of money” ...

Facing the Challenge

West Virginia’s colleges and universities were among the first to take drastic measures to protect our communities in response to COVID-19. The eight non-profit institutions that make up the West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities were no different — ending in-seat instruction, sending students home, adopting virtual learning platforms, and transitioning most employees to remote work. We will have students back to our campuses for the fall semester. This is not a decision that has been made overnight. In fact, since the beginning of the COVID outbreak, we have been ...

Memories Wonderful

Editor, News-Register: Thank you so much for the Nostalgia magazine included in the paper recently. What a great read. I never did the things as in the magazine because we did not have a car or probably the money but after I was married we did some of those things and this brought back many wonderful memories. I really enjoyed reading all these great things in the magazine. I wonder if the kids now days can relate to any of these memories. Betty Burkett Moundsville
