GREY2K Responds

Editor, News-Register: I was disappointed to see Senator Ryan Weld misrepresent the work of my nonprofit organization when it comes to greyhound adoption. As a matter of fact, we have provided more than $250,000 to greyhound adoption groups since 2018, and are likely the largest funder of greyhound adoption worldwide. We have directly led efforts to re-home hundreds of greyhounds after tracks closed, including in Arizona in 2016 and in Macau in 2018. We are prepared to serve the same role in West Virginia when greyhound racing ends, and would be overjoyed to help find homes for ...

Trump Did His Job

Editor, News-Register: I am one of the 72,351,000 chumps or deplorables who voted for Donald Trump, and why shouldn’t I? He has done his job as president. He did what he said and he said what he did. Now there are questions dealing with voter fraud, and the other side wants him to concede for the good of the country. If the software is a corrupt system that can change the votes within the system, they should be manually counted to preserve the integrity of the election. He has a right to file these cases to make sure the count is correct and dead people aren’t voting, or ...

Excited, Not Euphoric

Editor, News-Register: The dictionary defines the word “excited” this way: “having, showing or characterized by a heightened state of energy, enthusiasm, eagerness, etc.; feeling or showing excitement.” After the recent meeting of a labor caucus in the United States Congress, some union members exclaimed they were “excited.” All well and good. I’m glad there will be a “labor caucus.” The dictionary defines the word “euphoric” this way: “marked by a feeling of great happiness and excitement.” I remember the days of people serving our country in the ...

Bridges a Concern

Editor, News-Register: I am most curious as to what may be the future status of the historic Aetnaville Bridge, also known as the Georgia Street Bridge, which originally opened in 1891, connecting Aetnaville, Ohio, with Wheeling Island, West Virginia over the Ohio River. The bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 1988, as a result of “serious structural concerns.” However, the structure remained open for pedestrian traffic until its complete closure in January 2016. Since the quite popular and very scenic bridge has now been closed for approximately five years to all types ...

Sly Is Not Falling

Editor, News-Register: Via TV, I watched electors from the Electoral College cast votes in each state. It is heartening to me that the electors stood their ground and are performing their duties as they are sworn to do. Many electors had to have police escorts and vote in undisclosed buildings and rooms for fear of violence against them. This is more than worrisome; it is dangerous to our democratic processes. They have received death threats which their families have had to endure, all in a season of “Goodwill toward Men.” It appears that the current president is practicing ...

Thanks for Wearing Masks

Editor, News-Register: Thank you for continuing to wear your mask during this horrible plague of the coronavirus. By doing so, you are helping a number of senior citizens and those with special medical conditions to remain healthy and to continue to live on this earth. Perhaps, like me, you are growing tired of wearing a mask every time you enter a store, church or just around others. I find them uncomfortable. They prevent me from interacting with others in the way I want and I find myself constantly having to adjust them. However, from my research, I discovered that ...
