Team Effort Needed With Virus

Editor, News-Register: For West Virginia’s 602 nurse anesthetists, (the just passed) CRNA Week feels less about celebrating our profession and more about honoring those who touched our lives, and whose lives we touched, during the year of the pandemic. Across West Virginia, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists who have been providing critical care on the front lines of COVID-19, and those who have been providing anesthesia care behind the lines, want to recognize our healthcare colleagues with whom we’ve toiled side by side to provide comfort and healing to our patients. It ...

Time To Redesign W.Va. Flag

Editor, News-Register: There is nothing offensive about West Virginia’s flag, other than how boring it is. Our state has a proud and rich history that should be celebrated in a unique flag we can all be proud of. The current design is dated and does not adequately express our individuality. There are states like New Mexico, Maryland, and even Ohio that have unique flags that one can immediately identify. Our flag is the state seal on a white and blue background. Our flag breaks what vexillologists, those who study and design flags, call the primary rules of good flag design. It ...

Consider Education Options

Editor, News-Register: Amidst this wretched COVID pandemic, it is time to consider the long-term damage that has been done to a generation’s education. Although the effort has been sincere, online programs simply have not provided anywhere near the same amount of learning as a normal year. Certainly by next fall we should be on a normal, five-day-a-week schedule. It is time to consider massive efforts to catch up these children that have lost a year of school, and any way that time may be caught up. Could we extend the school day, or the school year? Any plausible approach ...

Always Read the Fine Print

Editor, News-Register: I would like to comment on the controversy surrounding the (social media) entities that have banned Donald Trump from their platforms. I read an editorial where you stated that this sets an alarming precedent. I think not! Trump was banned from Facebook and Twitter for speech that was considered inflammatory. His actions were in violation of the specific Terms and Conditions set forth by these entities as a right of use. This applies to anyone who uses these platforms. I ran across a statement on a social media site that stated that you have to serve ...

Fight for Your Kid’s Education

Editor, News-Register: If you are tired in Ohio County of your kids spending hours at home staring uselessly into a computer screen under the latest version of “remote learning” from Ohio County Schools, you parents need to start speaking up. Staying silent is no longer an option. Think about this — the health experts in charge of this pandemic in West Virginia have said it is perfectly safe to return to school five days per week in at least kindergarten through eighth grade. The experts have specifically said this backed by a multitude of scientific evidence. However, local ...

True Reflection Needed on Riot

Editor, News-Register: As a woman of faith, I watched the storming of the Capitol building as it unfolded with a mixture of disbelief, horror, and sadness. As I watched, one thought would not go away — what if they had been Black? In your January 11 “Reporter’s Notebook” editorial, while you denounced the actions of the rioters and called out our own state elected officials who are complicit because of their unwavering support of this president who incited this violence, I read nothing about the stark and undeniable racism on display that day. The white rioters were not only ...
