Finding Joy In Life’s Small Acts of Kindness

Editor, News-Register: Tears in her eyes, the Crying Girl in “Mean Girls” once wished she could “bake a cake made out of rainbows and smiles and we’d all eat and be happy.” While her classmates laughed, I have always admired the sincerity behind her words. After more than a decade of participating in GISH, a global scavenger hunt that raised money for various charities through creative and quirky challenges, and now the Rogue Hunt, a similar event that supports nonprofit causes, I truly believe she was onto something. Small, sincere acts of kindness and joy really ...

Are We Losing That Wheeling Feeling?

Editor, News-Register: TJ’s Sports Garden closed this past week. It’s sad to lose another establishment that occupied a niche of Wheeling’s personality. Since childhood, I loved to pass by TJ’s mural and marvel at the sports legends that have come from the Ohio Valley. My parents would point out some of the names and tell me their stories. Bill Mazeroski, Lou “The Toe” Groza, Bobby Douglas, The Wheeling Ironmen — they all became part of my personal history because we shared the same birthplace and because someone had found a creative way to remember them to the ...

Time to Bring War In Gaza to a Needed End

Editor, News-Register: In the past two months, more than 1,000 people seeking food have been killed, according to the UN Human Rights Office, as 28 nations recently condemned the “horrifying” killing of Gazans trying to get food,” according to Simon Mabon, Lancaster University. The Israelis are tearing my heart out. How dare the descendants of the greatest crime of all time — the Holocaust — not realize they are committing an equal crime against the people of Gaza, many of which are children. How dare Bibi Netanyeu blame his victims for the Israeli murder of thousands ...

What Are We Doing to Our Great Nation?

Editor, News-Register: I want to take a moment to talk about immigrants. Unless you are a Native American, you’re descended from an immigrant. Every nationality faced discrimination when they landed in the USA, save the British. Most were impoverished seeking a better life in a new land, no different than immigrants today, except many now are fleeing violence, war and persecution. So why now the government sponsored hate, cruelty and violence against immigrants? Contrary to popular belief, non-citizen immigrants are not collecting free health care, SNAP, free housing, Social ...

Time To Freeze ICE, Stop Fearmongering

Editor, News-Register: My granddaughter, Sarah, just graduated high school. She’s a good student, raised by two “mothers” who have given her a bright future. When Sarah was a toddler, her mother worked in a local school. “Maria” was hired as nanny-caretaker. She became Sarah’s second mother. After Sarah started school, Maria continued visiting weekly, as a job, housecleaning for my daughter. She also visited on holidays, not as a job, but a family member. Today, Maria stays in her apartment, afraid to drive to housecleaning work. She’s afraid to walk to local ...

Time for Wheeling To Rescind User Fee

Editor, News-Register: Is the $2 user fee still in effect in Wheeling? If it is, what is it now used for? It was voted down for the proposal at the parking lot on Market Street across from the Market Plaza. Council went ahead and instituted the fee anyway and then built a garage on Market Street anyway. The matter should have been dropped! With the economy the way it is, $8 extra each month for those living on a fixed income and working in Wheeling could be a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk for them and their family. Think about that. It’s time to rescind the $2 a week ...
