Politics on Display at Board Meeting

Editor, News-Register: The Board of Education is a non-partisan entity for a reason: politics should not play ANY role in determining the educational policies for our children. On Monday, Nov. 8, board chair David Croft established that he is more concerned about injecting his politics into board decisions than he is about the welfare of our children. Time and again, (people) took the floor to tout their own online “research” to the loud and repeated applause of the anti-vax/anti-mask crowd. One even levied personal attacks on the infinitely patient Superintendent Kim Miller by ...

Ohio Valley SleepOut Was a Success

Editor, News-Register: The Ohio Valley raised more than $42,000 for the 11th annual Wheeling SleepOut on Friday, Nov. 5. The event proceeds are directed to helping youth ages 17-21 with housing, life skills and resources through the Transitional Living Program at Youth Services System Inc. Be Safe This Season in the Woods

Editor, News-Register: During my 15 seasons as the head coach of the West Virginia University rifle team, I have seen the importance of hunting as a part of West Virginian culture. As our folks prepare to head out for another hunting season, we should all be aware of the potential signs of heart attack and stroke and the importance of having a plan in case of an emergency while in the woods. Vaccine Mandates Not Part of Deal

Editor, News-Register: Two of the biggest anti-union political decisions in the past 60-plus years were Bobby Kennedy’s relentless pursuit of iconic and controversial Teamster leader Jimmy Hoffa and conservative hero, former President Ronald Reagan’s firing of air traffic controllers in 1981. Much has been written about both, so to rehash the back story of the two leaders of opposite political parties going after these large transportation unions and their leadership isn’t necessary. Now the person in the White House is outdoing both. Present political leadership has already ...

Control Spending in Wheeling

Editor, News-Register: It’s nice to see where Julia Chaplin feels as I do about council spending, spending and then spending some more while looking for ways to spend some more. Why should we subsidize a private developer? Where do all of these potential leasers for apartments come from? This is a state, city and county that is losing population. Are all of our parking garages being utilized to the fullest? Also, while I agree police could use more room, there has to be a better way to go than spending a small fortune on the OVMC building. Their dreams of downtown Wheeling ...

Food Security Major Issue for U.S.

Editor, News-Register: “Who controls the food supply controls the people.” — Henry Kissinger The latest headline is that food has become a leading indicator of inflation in the U.S. Although true, the authors of these articles have missed the real story: “Food Security.” Being actively involved in the cattle industry, I have seen the untold stories of deception and misinformation over the past 18 months that has driven many ranchers to retire. The last 19 years the U.S. has lost over 75,000 farmer feeders. These are the small operations finishing out cattle for ...
