The Biden Presidency to Date

Editor, News-Register: I must admit that I was very optimistic upon the election of Joseph Robinette Biden II as the 46th President of our great country. In his 35 years in the U.S. Senate Mr. Biden was very productive, sponsoring 1,071 pieces of legislation, and was well-known, and highly respected, for his willingness to work with all senators regardless of party, in order to pass legislation that would be of benefit to the American people. During his tenure as vice president, Mr. Biden developed a reputation for being one of the most influential, industrious, and productive vice ...

Thank You to the America Fans!

Editor, News-Register: As a beginning music promoter I was delighted to see a great turnout for the America concert held on July 2 at The Capitol Theatre in downtown Wheeling. About 1,200 fans were in attendance and were treated to a fantastic show. America played for over 90 minutes and Hoard & Jones, the opening act, for 30 minutes. Many in the audience came up to me to say thanks for bringing America to Wheeling — some even saying it was one of the best concerts they had ever seen. Fans from as far away as New York, South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, etc., came to Wheeling ...

Compensate America’s Veterans

Editor, News-Register: In 2022 a totally disabled veteran with no dependents is compensated at the ridiculous rate of $39,984.72 dollars annually. The National Average Wage Index for 2020 was $55,628.60 per annum and the median income for 2020 was $67,521. The per capita GDP in 2020 was $63,416, among the highest in the world. This rate of compensation to disabled veterans is deliberate and cruel. Veterans have been asking various administrations and Congresses for fair compensation since the end of WWI in November 1918. That was 103 years ago. In my opinion the basic reason for ...

Questioning Wheeling’s Approach

Editor, News-Register: Beware of the proposed Homeless Low Barrier Shelter! They hired a Homeless Liaison, Melissa Adams, who is not accountable to us citizens. She is proposing a $20,000,000 building, with $700,000 initial planning and development, $15,000,000 for the first three years which does not include the salaries and maintenance. Therefore, $35,700,000 of your taxpaying dollars for this project. This position was supposed to be to assist and help the homeless recover from addictions, rehabilitate and get off the streets! Per Ms. Adams, this project was started before ...

Don’t End Medical Innovation

Editor, News-Register: When I read that President Biden was considering enacting Medicare negotiation to reduce inflation, I was very upset. While the president has argued that this measure will lower prescription costs and decrease inflation, the reality is more complicated. This measure could have major impacts on pharmaceutical innovation, significantly reducing research and development and limiting the number of new cures and treatments available for patients. For me, this issue is incredibly personal. No one ever expects to get sick, and I was no exception. Shortly after ...

Hope Doesn’t Harm Education

Editor, News-Register: The May 21, 2022, article in The Intelligencer titled “Hope Scholarship Could Cost Ohio County Schools More Than $500,000” implies this legislation may result in “the eventual loss of enrollment and teachers.” The numbers tell a different story. Data from the U.S. Department of Education reports that total funding for Ohio County Public Schools in 2018-19 was $74,495,000, or $14,114 per student. Let’s repeat this fact: each school-aged child in Ohio County Schools represents $14,114. When a child leaves the public education setting for ...
