Questioning Wheeling’s Approach

2 min read

Editor, News-Register:

Beware of the proposed Homeless Low Barrier Shelter! They hired a Homeless Liaison, Melissa Adams, who is not accountable to us citizens. She is proposing a $20,000,000 building, with $700,000 initial planning and development, $15,000,000 for the first three years which does not include the salaries and maintenance.

Therefore, $35,700,000 of your taxpaying dollars for this project.

This position was supposed to be to assist and help the homeless recover from addictions, rehabilitate and get off the streets! Per Ms. Adams, this project was started before she was hired. This enormous amount of money is being taken from our hard working, taxpaying citizens that are currently struggling to fill up their gas tanks, feed their families, pay taxes and pay their household expenses to live in our wonderful city of Wheeling. All taxpaying citizens know that the estimated costs of government projects are always more than the proposed cost and only increase exponentially from there on.

The Mayor and council members throw around millions of taxpayer dollars without the blink of an eye.

They are adding unelected officials, so that they are not held accountable for these ordinances and projects, and are not only increasing our city government costs, but they are enticing other homeless people to come to our city because it will be a luxury to live here without any obligation to contribute to our city. Then taxpaying citizens will be the ones in these shelters and no one will be able to fund the facility.

By drawing more homeless into our community, there will be increased criminal activity such as human trafficking, robberies, and drug dealing.

This is not cost-effective!

It is endangering us!

Citizens of Wheeling, I implore you to write, call, text and/or email the Mayor and ALL of the City Council Members!
