Vote No Tuesday on Ohio Issue 1

Editor, News-Register: I firmly believe Ohio voters should vote no on Issue 1 on Aug. 8. By voting no on Issue 1, you will ensure the majority will still rule in Ohio. If you’re a Democrat, Republican or independent, this vote is not about political parties or any candidate. It is all about keeping in place what all Ohioans have had for over 110 years, where a simple majority 50% plus one gave the citizens of Ohio the right for checks and balances of our state government. Since 1912, there have been 71 citizens petitions placed on the ballot in Ohio. Only 19 have passed the 50% ...

Vote Yes Tuesday on Issue 1

Editor, News-Register: “A human being begins as a submicroscopic speck, and by the human principle of life which God gives it develops all its organs and bones and nerves and gradually develops into a grown man.” (Mary Peckins Ryan, “Christ and Church.”) Holding fast to the truth of the above statement, every pro-life organization in the state of Ohio is urging a yes vote on the state’s Issue 1. Their opponents, backed by the American Civil Liberties Union and funded by Planned Parenthood, are claiming that a no vote is somehow promoting freedom, when their plan is ...

Reform Prescription Programs

Editor, News-Register: Like many others, my father struggles with some health issues related to long-COVID. For these folks, there’s still a long road of medical and financial uncertainty ahead. I would like to see more being done to expand research into the long-term impact of COVID and to help control the costs associated with long-term care and treatment. Congress can start by avoiding more prescription price-setting policies, which could inadvertently restrict researchers’ resources to continue finding and developing new, life-saving treatments and cures. Instead, lawmakers ...

Voting Against Issue 1 on Aug. 8

Editor, News-Register: I am concerned that the real reason for Issue 1 in Ohio is being clouded by our legislature and various religious and business entities. The issue that will be put before Ohio voters is whether the process to amend the Ohio constitution should be altered to make it more difficult to make changes. Currently, the 50% plus 1 or majority rule is in place. If Issue 1 is passed this would be replaced with a 60% plus 1 super majority vote. This does away with the majority rule and would enact a minority rule over the majority. It is not about abortions or gun control ...

Support Ohio Issue 1 on Aug. 8

Editor, News-Register: The Ohio Constitution is the most important document that supports the rights of all Ohioans. The Belmont County Republican Party stands for the rights of all Ohioans and therefore supports the preservation of our state’s Constitution. On Tuesday, Aug. 8, a proposed Constitutional Amendment, Issue 1, is on the ballot. Simply put, Issue 1 states that any amendment to the Ohio Constitution must receive at least 60% of the vote to be approved. Under the current system, it only requires 50%, plus 1 vote. This puts our Constitution at risk and makes it vulnerable ...

Dedicate Bridge in West Virginia

Editor, News-Register: The new bridge between Beech Bottom and Wellsburg is just about to open and be dedicated. They are planning to dedicate the bridge on the Ohio side. People of West Virginia, did you catch that? The ceremony (from what I’m told) will be on the Ohio side. We the people of West Virginia are paying for this bridge so why shouldn’t the ceremony be on the West Virginia side? Shame on you, Gov. Justice, state Sen. Weld, and Sens. Capito and Manchin. Shame on all of you. The ceremony for the West Virginia-financed bridge should be on the West ...
