Yes to Library Levy a No-Brainer

Editor, News-Register: Being FOR THE LEVY for the Ohio County Public Library is a no-brainer. There will be no new taxes. The levy will appear on the May 14 primary election ballot here in Ohio County. The Library provides so many resources to so many people in our community. The only time I’m happy to wait in line is when people are getting the gorgeous new library cards and checking out books. If you haven’t been to the library in a while, they’ve got a lot going on, like the Library of Things where you can borrow tools, games, baking & cooking items, and more. Or ...

Learning About West Virginia

Editor, News-Register: Dear people of the Great State of West Virginia: Hello! I am a third-grade student in Northern Virginia. Our class is learning about the United States, and I will be teaching our school about the state of West Virginia. In May, I will create a display for our State Fair that I hope will make you proud. Although I have gathered facts about your state from books and websites, I think I can receive the best information from the people who live there. This is why I am writing you. I am hoping that you would be willing to send me some items to help me learn more ...

Vote for the Library Levy May 14

Editor, News-Register: In the upcoming May 14 primary election, Ohio County voters have two important decisions to make that will affect the continuing growth, development, and success for Ohio County Schools and the Ohio County Public Library. Both entities provide outstanding services to citizens and fulfill important roles within their communities, and we need to demonstrate our support by approving both their excess levies on the ballot. Historically, the library has collaborated closely with the school system. Early efforts to establish a public library were supported and funded ...

‘Amnesty Day’ Good for Ohioans

Editor, News-Register: Many thanks to everyone involved with the recent “amnesty day,” designed to help area residents identify opportunities to have their suspended driver’s licenses reinstated, many without reinstatement fees. As a recent article mentioned, Ohio driver’s licenses can be suspended for a variety of reasons, including debt-related issues. Suspending a driver’s license as a tool to collect debt, rather than limiting this sanction to unsafe driving practices, hurts both job seekers and Ohio’s employers. That is why the passage of Senate Bill 37, ...

Napolitano’s Analysis Just Wrong

Editor, News-Register: In his column, published in the March 17 edition of the Sunday News-Register, Andrew Napolitano showed a serious misunderstanding of both St. Thomas Aquinas and Pope Francis. Napolitano asserts that, according to natural law, we instinctively know that 2+2 is 4, the sun rises in the east, that stealing a purse is wrong. In fact, according to St. Thomas, we have the potential to know these things, but that potential must be actualized through learning. For example, we have the potential to know arithmetic. And although most of us don’t remember learning ...

Ney Was Right on Bellaire Bridge

Editor, News-Register: Some of us remember the heyday of local talk radio when motor mouths in our area condemned former Congressman Bob Ney’s efforts to have the Bellaire Bridge dismantled. “We agree the bridge needs to come down,” they used to say, “but we don’t like the way he (Ney) is going about it.” Ney was in the process of tacking on a rider to a proposed bill, and it would have allocated $1 million for the dismantling work on the bridge. Instead of the owner footing the bill, the government would step in. Considering where we are today with the bridge, that ...
