Some of us remember the heyday of local talk radio when motor mouths in our area condemned former Congressman Bob Ney's efforts to have the Bellaire Bridge dismantled.
"We agree the bridge needs to come down," they used to say, "but we don't like the way he (Ney) is going about it."
Ney was in the process of tacking on a rider to a proposed bill, and it would have allocated $1 million for the dismantling work on the bridge.
Instead of the owner footing the bill, the government would step in. Considering where we are today with the bridge, that would have been the right move.
Not only was Ney's proposal a godsend (as we all know, local opposition led to him dropping the plan), it was innocent when compared to today's pork-barrel standards.
