Housing Issues in Ohio

Efforts in Columbus to address the shortage in affordable housing appear to be making a difference, though the momentum must be maintained. According to the 2025 Gap Report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition and the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio, there is a deficit of 264,083 rental units that are affordable and available to the 438,108 extremely low-income households in the Buckeye State. That’s an improvement over last year, when the shortage was 267,382. COHHIO Executive Director Amy Riegel called on the General Assembly to “maintain forward ...

Show Gratitude for Those Who Gave All

Here we are, in the midst of a three-day weekend that serves for many as the end of the school year and the beginning of summer. For some, it will be their first getaway of the season. For others, it will be the weekend on which they open their pool. For some, it will be the day on which they remember and honor loved ones lost in service to their country. That is, after all, the real reason for Monday’s observance of Memorial Day. For 155 years our nation has paused for just this one day to honor and grieve the men and women who have died while serving in the armed forces. ...

Showing Our Respect

Today, in the midst of summer celebration, we must remember “to observe Memorial Day by praying, according to (our) individual religious faith, for permanent peace,” as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reminds us. It’s not much to ask from those of us who will be able to enjoy the results of the sacrifice by those who were willing to give everything for this country. It’s not too much an inconvenience to participate in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. Monday, to offer a moment of silence for those who have died in service to the nation. Since December ...

It’s Race Day in Downtown Wheeling

Runners, walkers, dog owners and urban challenge conquerors taking part in the events that make up the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine have every reason to be proud of themselves. Simply being prepared mentally and physically to challenge the grueling race course, or to tackle the obstacles arranged through downtown and East Wheeling, is a notable achievement. Competing in these events is a highly personal thing. Do well, and you can pat yourself on the back. Don’t do as well as you had hoped, and you know you will have to work harder next time. But ...

Wheeling’s Men of Iron

It’s not easy being made of iron. Just ask Tim Cogan, Pat Cronin and Michael Lemaster. For 47 years, the three, early on the Saturday morning of each Memorial Day weekend, have laced up their shoes and headed to downtown Wheeling to compete in the Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic. Injuries have not gotten in the way. Neither have family commitments nor hundreds of other possible reasons. No, on those Saturday mornings the trio has logged their 13.1 miles over one of the most difficult half marathon courses in the nation. That’s no small feat. Think of it this way: over 47 ...

Money Left on the Table

As the legal advertisements for delinquent real and personal property taxes in Wednesday’s editions showed, far too many Ohio County residents left money on the table this year by not paying their personal property taxes on vehicles and other items on time in 2024. That’s something those who failed to pay on time need to rectify. Recall: the West Virginia Legislature in 2023 enacted a change that allows you to recoup, through a credit on your state income taxes, all personal property tax paid in the prior year. The catch is that the taxes have to be paid on time. That means, at a ...
