Money Left on the Table

2 min read

As the legal advertisements for delinquent real and personal property taxes in Wednesday's editions showed, far too many Ohio County residents left money on the table this year by not paying their personal property taxes on vehicles and other items on time in 2024. That's something those who failed to pay on time need to rectify.

Recall: the West Virginia Legislature in 2023 enacted a change that allows you to recoup, through a credit on your state income taxes, all personal property tax paid in the prior year. The catch is that the taxes have to be paid on time. That means, at a minimum, your first-half personal property taxes have to be paid by Oct. 1 of each year, and your second half by April 1. If you pay late, you don't qualify. All those listed in the delinquent tax listing missed out on getting that money returned.

For example, if you owed $1,000 in personal property taxes and paid it by Oct. 1 of last year, that money would have been credited back to you on your income tax return.

The 2025-26 personal property tax bills will be coming out soon. If you receive one, pay it by Oct. 1. If you don't, get to the assessor's office to get your vehicles registered so you can pay your taxes and get the credit. Don't leave money on the table.
