WHEELING -- An 18-year-old Wheeling man was charged Friday with DUI causing death in the crash that killed Wheeling Park High School student Devin Sovinsky.
According to a Wheeling Police Department release, Cory Joseph Sipos was charged with one felony count of DUI causing death. Sipos was arraigned Friday morning in front of an Ohio County magistrate and was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.
The crash occurred along Bethany Pike in the early morning hours of July 18, killing Sovinsky.
Sipos was the driver of the car. Another passenger, a minor, was injured in the crash.
According to the criminal complaint, WPD officers were called to the area of 95 Bethany Pike around 3:13 a.m. July 18. There, they found the crash and made contact with Sipos and the other passenger.
The other minor passenger told police that Sovinsky was still in the rear seat of the vehicle. They made contact with Sovinsky and found he was unresponsive. They administered aid and Sovinsky was transported to WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:05 a.m.
Officers suspected Sipos was intoxicated and a warrant was obtained to draw Sipos' blood at WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital. The draw was sent to the West Virginia State Police crime lab for analysis. WPD received the results July 31, allegedly showing Sipos had a blood alcohol content of .116.
According to the complaint, Sipos must report to a pre-trial release officer within 24 hours of his Friday hearing and do so weekly until further notice. He also cannot operate a motor vehicle while the charge is pending.
