WHEELING -- One little guy could be seen sprinting at full throttle as he ran from the school bus into Bethlehem Elementary School for the first day of school on Tuesday.

Others walked with trepidation, uncertain of what was awaiting them inside and in the classroom as they moved up another grade.

"I'm new here," said one boy, who appeared to be alone. "Can you tell me where to go?"

Off to the side, second-grade student Laurence Champagne Jr. was visibly nervous about the first day of school. His parents, Laurence Sr. and Savannah, stood with him and offered assurances.

"He doesn't remember where his classroom is," Laurence Sr. said of his son. He told the boy that they would find it and he would come to know where it is.

Another second grade student, Grayson Beck, and his mother Lacie stood outside waiting for the doors to be unlocked at 8:45 a.m. for the start of classes at 9:10 a.m He shook his head yes when asked if he was excited about the start of school.

"I like projects," Beck said. He shook his head yes again when asked if he would like working in the new maker space at the school.

His mother admitted she was sad to see school start.

"I felt the summer flew by too fast," Lacie Beck said. "But I am excited for him to get back to learning."

Third grader Ryleigh McQuaid expressed excitement about the school and was well-spoken about why she did.

"I want to do more reading," she said. "I love reading."

Fourth grade student Macie Lewis and her brother Zeke Lewis, in second grade, entered the school together. Macie Lewis said she liked media class and reading, while her brother liked gym.

Physician education teacher David Whitlach said it isn't unusual for the youngsters to appreciate gym time.

"They get to run around and exercise. They enjoy being active," he said.
