1 min read

Martha Thorn, who coached tennis at West Virginia from 1973-2000 died on Sunday following months of declining health.

She was 83 years old.

Thorn began the women's tennis program at WVU in 1973, just one year after the Title IX legislation was enacted.

Thorn won 315 matches during her 27 years at West Virginia and was only the fourth coach in school history to capture 300 career victories in any sport back in 1999.

West Virginia renamed its fall women's tennis tournament The Martha Thorn Invitational in her honor and in 1997, a team award was established in her name to recognize the player that best exemplified effort, dedication and consistency.
