MORGANTOWN -- Just days ahead of its first night game inside Milan Puskar Stadium in the Neal Brown era, the Big 12 Conference announced on Wednesday that the Oklahoma and West Virginia football game scheduled for Saturday night at 7 p.m. has been postponed until Dec. 12.
The time and television designation is to be determined.
The postponement came after Oklahoma failed to meet the Big 12's COVID-19 requirements.
This is the first time this year that COVID-19 has impacted a West Virginia game and Brown feels for the players and fans but is more concerned with the health of the Oklahoma team.
"First of all I want to wish Oklahoma the best and I hope they'll get back safe and healthy soon," Brown said in a statement on Twitter. "I'm extremely disappointed for our players. We've had a great week-and-a-half in preparation for the game Saturday night.
"I'm disappointed for our fans, who I know are eagerly anticipating the first night game here at Mountaineer Field in two years.
"We're going to celebrate Thanksgiving (today) as a team and then get back on the practice field on Friday in preparation to play Iowa State in Ames on Dec. 5.
"Then we'll look forward to hosting Oklahoma on Dec. 12 and finishing our season strong.
"I want to wish everybody a happy Thanksgiving and stay safe."
The Sooners currently sit second in the Big 12 standings with a 6-2 overall record and a 5-2 mark in conference play, while the Mountaineers are fifth with a 5-3 overall mark and a 4-3 Big 12 record.
Both teams still have a shot at playing for a Big 12 Championship.
In order to do so, the Mountaineers will have to win their final two games against current Big 12 leader Iowa State (6-2 overall, 6-1 Big 12) and then take out Oklahoma in what could end up being a play-in game for the Big 12 title bout.
WVU may also need losses from Texas and Oklahoma State, both 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference, who sit in a tie for third in the Big 12.
