Keep Up the Fight Against Opioid Scourge

As West Virginians have waded through the battle against the substance abuse epidemic over the past several years, it has become clear there is fault to find at many levels — from “legal” drug dealers masquerading as doctors to pharmaceutical industry giants. That is, of course, in addition to the illegal drug operations that realized what was happening and seized the moment. As state attorney general, Gov. Patrick Morrisey did an excellent job battling companies such as Johnson and Johnson, CVS and Kroger — to name a few — in an effort that has yielded hundreds upon hundreds ...

Helping Ohio’s Students

It turns out state officials are, indeed, working toward bringing more supports to public school students who are already thinking about life after high school graduation. Last week, Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce announced $7.1 million for the Career Pathway Support Networks Request for Applications. The money is part of a two-year effort to prepare students for in-demand careers through “advising, mentoring, exposure to various professions, and expanded career-technical education,” according to DeWine’s office. Funding will be distributed ...

Cochran a Treasure of Marshall County

It was obvious the late Jim Cochran cared for his home community of Marshall County. It showed in the care he took over a career of chronicling its comings and goings for The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register that spanned more than 70 years. Cochran made telling the stories that needed told in Marshall County his life’s work, from his decades stationed at the Journal office in Moundsville to the years after his retirement from full-time work spent authoring the “Marshall Memo,” a weekly column dedicated to the news of Marshall County. He always tried his hardest to reach ...

Teaching at All Angles

Ohio parents want their children’s schools to educate them in all the traditional subjects, of course, but the idea is that our public schools are a big part of what prepares students for life beyond the classroom someday. To that end, Bucyrus City Schools in Crawford County has come up with an idea other districts might want to consider. According to a report by the Bucyrus Telegraph Forum, the district has partnered with Team NEO to credential EVERY staff member as either a career connections adviser or career connections ambassador. This isn’t just teachers. This is every ...

Care Facilities’ Buyer Must Keep Promises

After what appears to have been a long process, the West Virginia Department of Health Facilities seems to have found success in selling some of its long-term care facilities for seniors. New York-based Marx Development Group plans to buy Hopemont Hospital in Preston County, Jackie Withrow Hospital in Raleigh County, John Manchin Sr. Health Care Center in Marion County, and Lakin Hospital in Mason County. Though the planned purchase price of $60 million may sound a bit low for four long-term care facilities, the cost savings to the state is expected to more than make up for it. The ...

Artificial Intelligence Means Farewell to the ‘Net-Zero’ Fantasy

Artificial intelligence is upon us, is here to stay, and is heading in one direction: more. More AI means more electric power generation — a lot more. “Green” or “renewable” energy is not going to cut it, no matter the fantasies of the climate-change doomsday crowd. That means the climate goals of “net-zero” carbon emissions by 2050, or whatever is the latest movable goal post set by the U.N., federal and state bureaucrats, is a dead letter. Net-zero always was a farcical, unscientific and unrealistic dogma designed to reorder societies and increase government and ...
