Jacob Utt from Moundsville Middle School and Takoda Barton, Emily Gatts and Chloe Pickett from Sherrard Middle School are being recognized for their outstanding knowledge of West Virginia history by being named the 2024 West Virginia Golden Horseshoe winners in Marshall County.
Given every year since 1931, the Golden Horseshoe test assesses student knowledge of state government, history, economics, geography, and current events.
The Golden Horseshoe test is not a statewide competition which means 8th grade students compete against other 8th graders who attend school in their own county. The number of winners per county is based on population.
Students with the highest scores in each county earn the distinguished Golden Horseshoe award. During a formal pinning ceremony, students are inducted as Knights of the Society.
The four Marshall County students will be honored at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston on Tuesday, June 11.
This year, 227 eighth graders from across West Virginia earned recognition as Knights of the Golden Horseshoe.

Members of the Marshall County Literacy Council said it was a privilege to honor its Rita Takach Reading Teacher of the Year for 2024.
Nominees for the award included Becky Ryder, Hanna Neely, Jonna Kuskey, Natalie Horner and Nicole Majewski.
Majewski, a first-grade teacher at McNinch Primary School, was announced as the winner at the MCLC's Spring's Banquet this past Monday.
When asked about promoting literacy in her classroom, Majewski answered, "First and foremost I get to know my students as developing readers and assess and teach to get their areas of literacy learning needs using research-based practices." Her methodologies of literacy instruction "always evolve from my philosophy of making quality literacy learning accessible to all students."
Dr. Allison Swan Daren from West Virginia University stated, "Like Rita Takach, Nicole Majewski is dedicated to the art and science of teaching reading --the best of the best.
"She is a teacher leader, and her work will contribute to improving the content and pedagogical understanding of the WV primary grade teachers.''
Her principal, Jane Duffy, said that, "Nicole brings a lot of energy to her classroom and uses a variety of teaching strategies and resources with her students to meet their needs. Majewski is a teacher-leader. She is an educator that implements evidence based best practices in her classroom and utilizes a variety of innovative methodologies.''
Majewski will complete an application for West Virginia Reading Association's Eddie C. Kennedy Award.
