Marshall Memo: Queen of Queens; ‘Curtain Up;’ and History Bowl

Ten John Marshall High School girls will be competing in the school's Queen of Queen's Pageant to be held on Feb. 22 in the school's Center for Performing Arts. The contestants are: Sydney Barnhart, Annadra Dudley, Grace Gatts, Victoria Henry, Amelia Kaste, Hailey McFarland, Lauren Rice, Marra Tharp, Rozzalin Wallace, and Reese Ward. Each contestant will be scored in three categories which include interview, talent, and poise/presentation. Tony Summers will be the Master of Ceremonies, and the Pageant Coordinator is Tracey Filben. Attendees showing their personalized Marshall County Schools Activity pass will get free admission, as will children under five years of age. All others will pay $5. Tickets will be available at the door which opens at 5:30 p.m.

The annual Marshall County Strings Program titled, "Curtain Up" will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 at the John Marshall Center for Performing Arts. The students will be performing timeless melodies. In addition to providing musical entertainment for the evening, the event also aims to make a positive impact as donations collected will benefit the Marshall County Strings Program Scholarship and the American Cancer Society Marshall County Relay for Life in honor of Hannah Woods. Hannah is a string student who was diagnosed with sarcoma in November of 2022 and has received radiation treatments, chemotherapy, and surgery at WVU Children's Hospital.

The Benwood-McMechen Public Library plans the following after-school events in March. "The Super Mario Bros Movie" (rated PG) will be shown at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 6. At 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, the movie "Puss in Boots the Last Wish" (rated PG) will be shown.

There will also be a free Chess Club with Joshua Phillips for all ages and levels of experience held on Thursdays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Union Room.

Sherrard Middle School will once again represent the Northern Panhandle in the West Virginia History Bowl Championship to be held in Charleston this April. The Rams competed against 10 other schools at the Region VI History Bowl Tournament held recently in Wheeling. Sherrard Team 2 defeated Sherrard team 1 in the finals. The team members on Team 2 include Conner Fromhart, Emily Gatts, Chase Fromhart, and Chloe Pickett. Aubreigh Anderson, Takoda Barton, Abigail Haught, and Allison Twigg are members of team 1. Both teams are coached by Dan Gatts and Jeff Stephens.

The Marshall County Board of Education on Tuesday approved several personnel matters at the regular meeting.

Resignations included Deborah Jochum, ECCAT at McNinch Primary; Brenda Crow, Secretary at McNinch Primary; Erin Holmes, Aide/Autism Mentor at McNinch Primary; Angela Richmond, substitute aide/LPN; Robin O'Neil, cook at Moundsville Middle; Dirk Roe, Music Teacher at Cameron High School; Derek Martin, Assistant Varsity Track Coach at Cameron High; Layne Martin, Assistant Softball Coach at Cameron High School; and Michael Sforza, Assistant Football Coach at Sherrard Middle Schools. Employment and transfers include Matt Ali, Teacher of Carpentry at John Marshall High School; Hunter Lightener, Custodian at Cameron Elementary; Kayla Kidd, transferring from Bus Operator (77-22) to Bus Operator (Special Needs) Route 2 Countywide; Sarah Ward, transferring from Aide/ECCAT at Cameron Elementary to Aide/ECCAT at Center McMechen Elementary; and others.
