Marshall Memo: Handing Out Taxpayer Funds; Budgets; and Books

The Marshall County Commission is accepting Community Development Funds now through Feb. 23. This is a grant opportunity offered by county taxpayer funds. The funding level for this year will be $75,000. Once the deadline is over, the requests will be reviewed by a committee.

Moundsville City Manager Rick Healy outlined several issues at Tuesday's council meeting. A budget meeting with finance director Karen Ankrom has taken place. He said the first meeting was extremely productive with the expected revenues almost competed. Meetings will take place weekly with all department heads having until Jan. 31 to turn in their budget worksheets. He added that the fourth quarter 2023 municipal sales had been received, with the total being $554,537, which brought the total for calendar year 2023 to $2.43 million.

The Benwood-McMechen Public Library will have three specials events during the month of February: A movie titled "The Bad Guys" at 4 p.m. on Feb. 7; "Dungeons and Dragon: Honor Among Thieves" at 4 p.m. Feb. 21, and a free chess club for players of all ages and abilities with Josh Phillips from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursdays in the Union Room.

The Knights of Columbus Council No. 1907 and St. Francis Xavier Parish, both of Moundville, will hold Lenten Fish Frys starting Ash Wednesday (Feb. 14). The event will be held at the Parish's Xavier Hall from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Gary Rider and Roseanna Dakan Keller are still seeking stories for two books they are currently working on. The first one is Marshall County Patriots and Heroes Volume 14. They plan to release this book and May and still have room for a few more veterans' stories. The second book is Memories of Reynolds Memorial Hospital. If you worked or had a relative who was employed at the hospital, they would like to gather information about that experience. You can call Gary at 304-845-3161.

The Northern Panhandle Continuum of Care's annual Point in Time count will take place in the Northern Panhandle from 4 p.m. on Jan. 24 to 4 p.m. Jan. 25. The Point in Time Count lets NPC determine the area's homeless population. Volunteers are needed in Marshall County to be stationed at the Feeding Body and Soul Community Kitchen and for a Benwood outreach team. Those interested in volunteering will need to complete a mandatory training via Zoom on Jan. 17.
