When you put things away and then years later decide to review them, you might be surprised what you find. That happened to me just a few weeks ago. In my case it was some newspaper clippings pertaining to the Moundview Health Care Center. The clippings consisted of four pages along with the front page of "The Call." There were photographs of the three owners of the new center and three additional pages describing the facility. This was Aug.14, 1978. The actual opening of the city's first health care center had recently taken place.
The cost of the center in 1978 was $2 million. The Moundview Heath Care Center was located at the foothills of the Hancock Park Area.
Let's switch over to today, and the current owner which is CommuniCare. That entity also is the owner of Cameron Health Care Center and Brooke County Wellsburg Health Care Center. The Moundsville location's capacity is 125 bed units featuring both private and semi-private rooms.
By the way, three of the Moundsville location's leadership are Executive Director Diane Miller, who has 15 years of leadership in the health center environment; Jordan Burress, a native of Benwood; and Samantha Walters, a John Marshall High School graduate.
Of course, you can't forget the Cameron Heath Care Center which was officially transitioned as a CommuniCare Center in 2023. Cameron offers most of the same services as Moundsville and is slightly smaller with a capacity of 100 beds. Cameron's executive director is Brooke Francis.

Glen Dale native Brad Paisley will be in West Virginia this weekend for a football scrimmage at the new Herbert Hoover High School. The opponent in the game is his alma mater, John Marshall High School. It was in 2016 that Paisley first came to Herbert Hoover after a devastating flood. Paisley was one of the many donors to the relief effort.

This past Thursday in Marshall County was a historic day, celebrating the groundbreaking of a new Health Department. It was also a day that I will remember when County Commission President Mike Ferro, in his closing remarks, stated, "I would be remiss if I didn't mention our special guest Jim Cochran, a long-time reporter for the Wheeling New- Register and most especially our friend. Jim we are glad you are able to join us today. It would not have been the same without you."
The Health Department building and Journal building stood side by side for more than 65 years, so I am excited to see the new facility being built on this space.
Heath Department Administrator Tom Cook welcomed everyone and thanked the commission, local administrators and Health Department staff for their work and dedication. He also stated that the new facility will include a training facility and will be a safe and secure workplace environment for all employees.
Ferro said the construction of the Health Department has been discussed for many years.
He also noted the building will have long-term storage for the courthouse and will have room for the county clerk to store election equipment. He also thanked Cook and his staff, Health Department Board of Directors, Betsy Frohnapel, Jim Taylor and John Berry. Thanks was also given to the City of Moundsville for providing the logistics for the road and alleyway closures as well as to those impacted by the work.
