Marshall Memo: Progress in Moundsville in 2022; Steel Drums; and Book Signings

The city of Moundsville's 2022 Year-End Report was submitted to city council members by City Manager Rick Healy Tuesday.

"As we continue to see progress, it is evident that the changes and improvements we are making affects our citizens, businesses and visitors both directly and indirectly," Healy said. "Knowing we have such a significant impact is true responsibility. I take that responsibility (and I know you do very seriously and personally."

Healy discussed 2022 accomplishments, along with his looking forward to 2023.

He made mention of the 1 percent Municipal Use Tax receipts for calendar year 2022 as being $2.1 million, $178,322 more than 2021. He pointed out the tax continues to be a game-changer for the city. He said the tax has allowed for replacement of items that were well overdue.

Tax collections went to the following areas:

– Capital Expenditures -- In 2022, $718,103 was used for costs related to the construction of the new municipal building.

– Demolition of one fire-damaged structure and the Sanford Center.

– Paving -- Sections of 11 streets.

– Recreation--With parts of the costs being for the splash pad adjacent to the Four Seasons Pool, improvements to Park View Playground, scoreboards, fencing, court paving, Valley Fork cameras and new lighting.

John Marshall High School's Steel Drum Band, under the direction of Tracey Filben, has been selected to play at the upcoming West Virginia Music Educators Association Conference in Charleston. JMHS being one of the top three schools from the Mountain State.

Since the X-Honor Ensemble's inception in 2016, the JM Steel Drum Band has been selected for this honor four times. Groups are only eligible every other year, if they are selected.

The local 14-piece Steel Drum's performance will take place at 11 a.m. on March 23 at the Charleston Civic Center. Tunes from many different genres will be played on the streel pans.

Members of the JM Steel Drum Band include:

Joey Armstrong, Cameron Anderson, Pearl Chambers, Rebekah Clark, Toni Dixon, Megan Gray, Lizzy Howard, Mikayla Kazemka, Karly Minch, Lauren Rice, Jacob Rivera, Ricky Robinson, and Jude Thomas.

Limestone Presbyterian church will sponsor a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Feb. 21 beginning at 4 p.m.

Plain, blueberry, chocolate chip, and buckwheat pancakes will be on the menu along with fresh sausage from McConnell's Market.

Donations received will go to the Limestone Cemetery Fund. Call 304-780-9864 for further information if needed.

The Limestone Cemetery behind Limestone Presbyterian Church on U.S. 250 South in Marshall County is a separate entity from the church and is in need of funds to continue upkeep.

Support for Limestone Cemetery comes from the sale of lots, of which few re-main, and from donations.

Cameron High School senior Kolten Wendt is the most recent Career & Technical Education Student of the Quarter. He is enrolled in the Plant Systems program.

He is currently an active member of FFA and National Technical Honor Society. He has earned multiple Dragon awards. His community activities include being involved at church, raising farm animals, and showing livestock at the Marshall County Fair.

Kolten also works for the city of Cameron in the maintenance department, is the tool inspector for the CHS greenhouse, does lawn care management and raises pigs and cows for FFA projects.

He is the son of Rich Wendt.

Authors Gary Rider and Roseanna Keller announced the release of their new book, "Memories of The Benwood Mill."

This book tells the story of the mill through the eyes of the workers who made the mill the premier pipe producing plant in the United States.

The book contains many photographs and individual stories from those who worked in the office to those who made the pipe and ran the cranes.

The authors will have a book signing from 2-4 p.m on Feb. 15 at the Moundsville Public Library.

The second signing will be at Undo's in Benwood from 1-3 p.m. Feb. 23.

Thomas Krupica, Sr., retired educator from Marshall County Schools with a life-long obsession with the Titanic, has penned a new book titled, "Titanic Lifeboat #6: Was It Deception or Regulations?'

He will be doing a book-signing at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Li-brary at 6:30 p.m. April 3.

The Ron Retzer Trio will be taking the stage at 7 p,m, of the Strand Theatre in Moundsville today (Saturday) for a Valentine concert titled, "A Strand of Love." In addition to Retzer, other members of the trio are Jennifer Galownia and Bob Wolfe.
