Many Helped Make Fest Success

Editor, News-Register: The Ohio Valley Black Heritage Festival Committee, originator of the Rib & Chicken Cook-Off, thanks all of the people who attended this year’s cook-off event. A special thanks is extended to our sponsors who, without their support, the festival would not be possible. Sponsors include Wheeling-Ohio County CVB, Walmart, Riesbeck’s Food Markets, WesBanco Bank, Rich & Shirley’s QuickPrint, West Virginia Division of Culture & History, Carenbauer Distributing Corp., Fitzsimmons Law Firm, Kroger, Ohio County Commission, and Wheeling Heritage. There Is a Plan at Wheeling U

Editor, News-Register: I read William Becker‘s letter dated June 27, 2021 “What’s the Plan at Wheeling U,” and I strongly disagree with his assessment of the current president and administration for Wheeling University. William does recognize that “the troubles” were not created by the current administration, but believes that no meaningful plan has been developed for the school. He leads one to believe that the only hope for survival for Wheeling University is through the alumni and restoring the Jesuit affiliation and ownership. As William suggested in his letter, ...

Fighting for Individual Liberty

Editor, News-Register: The last year has been a struggle. Lockdowns, restrictions, job losses, foreclosures and bankruptcies have crippled our economy. Then there’s the physical toll — rises in addiction, depression and domestic abuse. It’s time for us to rebuild, but to start that process we needed to break the chains of government overreach. That’s what I’ve spent the first six months in office doing. Now, let me explain how. Two bills were introduced in the Ohio legislature empowering us to rescind orders by the governor or director of health. The first was SB22, which ...

What’s the Plan at Wheeling U?

Editor, News-Register: On Thursday, the 27th of May, I attended the West Virginia Black Bears baseball game against the Frederick (Md.) Keys. Before the first pitch a father, with his five very well-behaved boys, took seats in the row in front of my wife and myself. As expected of one who has kissed the Blarney Stone twice, we struck up a conversation. The gentleman indicated that he was a graduate of the University of Virginia, with a Ph.D. in theology from Catholic University. He is a theology professor at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmittsburg, Maryland. When asked and ...

Helping in Fight Against Cancer

Editor, News-Register: Cancer doesn’t stop for a pandemic. Every day, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network continues its lifesaving work to fight cancer through public policy. My cousin is a three-time breast cancer survivor. This experience compelled me to become part of the ACS CAN team, and further their lifesaving mission. Right now, due to COVID related fundraising declines, that mission is being threatened like never before. The good news is, there are generous organizations out there stepping up to help ACS CAN during this difficult time. I want to thank ...

Palmer Thanked for Ordinance

Editor, News-Register: Kudos to Councilman (Dave) Palmer for the (now passed) firework restrictions. Perhaps those opposed need to have visiting drunken revelers such as I had last July 4. My neighbor’s relative came from out of town and for three hours got progressively drunk and fired off innumerable incendiary devices. Three of them hit my house. He certainly was in no condition to handle a fire had one started. Yes, a few people make the use of these devices harmful to the rest of us. Those of us who have pets don’t care for the PTSD they suffer because of such ...
