Ohio Valley Heart Walk Is Set

Editor, News-Register: Over the past year, the Ohio Valley has prioritized health more than ever. Our community has rallied around healthy habits by prioritizing mental and physical health. Now is the time to renew that commitment to health. Cardiovascular disease, including stroke, remains the No. 1 killer of Americans. We need to meet that challenge with the same vigor to better prevent, diagnose and treat heart disease and stroke so that fewer people suffer and die. Improving health is a long-term plan and what we do as a community today builds a future and a legacy for the ...

Working For Their Constituents

Editor, News-Register: I was wondering how many people benefited from the American Rescue Act which was signed into law on March 11, 2021. This package included the Child Tax Credit, emergency SNAP benefits, rental assistance and paycheck protection. The sad thing is that all three of the representatives from West Virginia voted against it. It is also interesting to note that they did not vote to protect our elections and our right to vote. When I vote for someone to represent me, I want them to think about issues that affect me, my family and my neighbors. I do not need ...

Country Comes Before the Party

Editor, News-Register: I’d like to respond to a recent published Letter to the Editor from a Mr. Denny Longwell from New Martinsville. I don’t know if Mr. Longwell has ever ran for a political office, is running or will run in the future. But he sure does have the political speech and rhetoric down pat. Only a politician can use that many words and in effect not really say anything. Mr. Longwell is the perfect example of a major problem of the growing political divisiveness that is spreading throughout this great country. Liberals like him love their party more than they ...

Nutrition Important to Education

Editor, News-Register: In the wake of the pandemic, the attention to food and nutrition security for our children came to life. We learned that for millions of children and families in West Virginia and across the country, school meals are a lifeline, providing our kids with nearly half their daily calories and a consistent source of good nutrition. The science is clear: children do best academically and are less likely to develop chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes if they are eating healthy foods. As a teacher in West Virginia, I have watched the child ...

Climate, Politics and What to Do

Editor, News-Register: Every day the climate crisis worsens, and economic inequality grows. Conservative politicians, aided by the Supreme Court, are rolling back basic human rights across the country. In West Virginia, as soon as Republicans took control of our State Legislature they rolled back mine safety 50 years or more. What’s shocking is how little urgency elected leaders have shown in response. With each new development, it seems as if this is time, surely, those in power will recognize the severity of the challenge, and act accordingly. Equally important is our ...

Get Out and Vote this November

Editor, News-Register: In July 1776, Thomas Jefferson, representing the Continental Congress, wrote about self-evident truths, including certain inalienable rights — life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness. Inalienable means universal, inviolable. Jefferson never declared those rights could have exceptions across the colonies. That declaration sparked a revolution. In June 2022, the Supreme Court plucked the right to abortion out of the Constitution and returned decisionmaking on it to the states. In other words, they declared a right previously in the Constitution need not be ...
