Debate Over Coal, Renewables

Editor, News-Register: The West Virginia Public Service Commission has come under criticism for favoring coal-fired generation over renewable energy. The fact is that the Commission favors lower cost generation over higher cost generation. It is often said that coal is not a cost-efficient electricity production fuel; that the cost of renewable resources from all technologies are dead even with coal-produced energy; and that West Virginians pay a lot more for electricity than customers in many other states. Editor, News-Register: 1. While Russia is losing ground previously taken from Ukraine, it is overwhelming Ukrainians with massive attacks on power and water infrastructure. 2. Ukrainians are absorbing these blows with resilience and courage, but their endurance has limits. 3. Russia has more offensive weapons, including cheap drones, than Ukraine’s expensive defense weapons. 4. While we provide Ukraine’s defensive weapons, our supplies are running low. 5. Editor, News-Register: We didn’t get a name.  But this heart-felt “thank you” goes out to the Wheeling-area nurse who was kind enough to stop and comfort my daughter after a wreck on 2-Mile Hill during Friday morning’s snowstorm.  Your compassion and empathy were certainly welcomed at an extremely traumatic time. Editor, News-Register: I live on Middle Grave Creek Road in Marshall County and I clean up trash along that road with my sister every Sunday. There were five political signs placed in a pull-off spot on the state right of way before the election. Today, we found said signs lying on the creek bank in the same location. I looked up the law regarding placement of political signs and discovered it is a $25 - $100 per day fine for placing them on the state right of way. Editor, News-Register: As a longtime fan of the Cleveland Major League Baseball franchise, now known as the Guardians, but from 1915-2021 as the Cleveland Indians, I was quite pleased and encouraged by the team’s fine performance on the diamond during the most recent 2022 season.
