Spirit on Display in Belmont Co.

Editor, News-Register: It was with great sadness that I heard about the fire destroying the American Legion in Glencoe. I was born and raised there and have been following with interest the recent developments. On behalf of the Kaplet family of Glencoe, I would like to state publicly how heartening it has been to see the outpouring of support for the people of this community. I am told there are fund-raising efforts being held in other communities to help in the cleanup and rebuilding. The Legion Hall was the heart of the community when I lived there. And it was for many ...

Wheeling’s ‘Wonder Women’

Editor, News-Register: March is Women’s History Month, and we are blessed in Wheeling to have our very own “Wonder Women” — those who enrich our city each day. Two recently deceased, Bettie Steele and Trudy Forster, and fresh in memory. Bettie was a whirlwind and did so much for West Virginia Independence Hall, especially the flag exhibit. Trudy was a super nurse who once ran several departments at Wheeling Hospital and recently served as secretary to three Catholic parishes. And we don’t want to take our youngsters for granted. The newspaper insert “The Future of ...

Housing Options Need Improved

Editor, News-Register: Why does HUD continue to mix peaches with lemons when it comes to the housing market? What is needed is a high-rise for seniors, 60 years of age and older, who are living on a fixed income. Instead, what we have are seniors, handicapped, the homeless and those involved in using illegal drugs all living under one roof! Would you want a close relative living under such conditions? Let your local elected officials and your state officials know that it is wrong for your loved ones in Wheeling, West Virginia, to live this way. Let them know that this has to ...

Consider New Route to Highlands

Editor, News-Register: Regarding the thinking of adding another interchange at The Highlands, to facilitate traffic flow, I humbly suggest, as I did years ago, that a back route should be developed from U.S. 40 up to The Highlands. This could be developed from either Triadelphia or Valley Grove as roads already exist along that area, and would add an economic boon all along Route 40 from Elm Grove to Washington, Pa. This would also alleviate traffic on I-70. William Hefner Florida

A Man With No Apparent Shame

Editor, News-Register: During the recent Conservative Political Action Conference, former President Donald J. Trump gave the keynote speech with his typical ego-driven discourse in which he vowed to “get revenge on behalf of those Americans” whom he stated have been wronged and betrayed by liberal and Republican elites and also provocatively claiming, “I am your warrior. I am your justice.” Quite disturbing rhetoric, especially from the individual who served as the chief architect of the violent insurrection of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in which he promised to ...

She Believes Justice Not Served

Editor, News-Register: This is an open letter to Circuit Court Judge Ronald Wilson. Why did you not sentence Ronald J. Sebeck to the maximum monetary fine of $5,000, and have him serve jail time? You could have sentenced him to one to five years of jail time. Instead, you chose to let him sit in his comfortable home for one year of home confinement, and building boxes with animal food. The monetary restitution does not even begin to give the family peace. I am sure the family of Poppy would love to be home with their little fur baby. What a brutal, inhumane thing to happen to such ...
