No Vote Is Right on Ohio Issue 1

Editor, News-Register: These politicians in Columbus claim that Issue 1 defends our Constitution from special interests, but that is an enormous lie. The changes that will come about if we pass Issue One, such as raising the threshold to pass an amendment to 60%, requiring signatures to come from all 88 counties and eliminating the 10-day cure period, would make it easier for really rich people and giant out-of-state special interests to buy our Constitution. Think about it — Issue 1 won’t stop the need for Constitutional amendments — they will still happen. But it will stop ...

Vote Yes for Religious Freedom

Editor, News-Register: The “progressive” minions of Planned Parenthood are in a dither about Issue 1 on the August ballot. Raising the percentage of the vote to be in greater agreement with the federal Congress seems to offend them greatly. In a blatant attempt to remake Orthodox Christianity in the image of Biden-Pelosi, this coven proposes a petition to make abortion a state law, and they believe they have a chance of success if the rule remains at 50% plus one. In this petition is a blatant attempt to override the First and 14th amendments, and the divine commandment “Thou ...

Don’t Let Others Speak for You

Editor, News-Register: Why sign up to speak before the City Council only to give your time to someone else? If one signed up to speak, one must have had something to say. Surely you aren’t in cahoots with another speaker to extend his/her time. If someone wants to speak at the council meetings, they have every right to do so. Sign up to be heard and you will be heard. You will be given three minutes to say what you have to say. Everyone gets the same amount of time. If three minutes is not enough, maybe the one who wishes to speak should rewrite their speech for the time ...

Room for New at the Old School

Editor, News-Register: West Virginia is old school, this is not up for debate. But being old school on the new school transfer rule is not noble; it’s just backwards. Not every coach or program is infallible. Previously, a student transferring after ninth grade was required by the WVSSAC to sit out one year unless he or she could verify a change of address into the district of the new school or petitioned the WVSSAC and won an appeal. I can tell you that the appeal decisions were arbitrary at best. Now a student in West Virginia can transfer high schools at least once and maintain ...

An Ego-Driven, Hypocritical Legacy

Editor, News-Register: How is it that former President Donald J. Trump remains as the unquestioned defacto current leader of the Republican Party, when while in office it had been documented that he was personally responsible for no fewer than 30,573 false statements (lies), and with his egotism and hypocrisy being quite beyond compare, along with his multitude of misdeeds and divisive rhetoric, have seemingly, done little to curb his popularity within his current political party (Republican)? Recall also that for decades Mr. Trump had been a staunch Democrat, before becoming an ...

Heroic Act Saves Mother’s Life

Editor, News-Register: There are angels among us. Two of those angels are Carol Cassidy and Meaghan Hettinger, staff members at Bishop Hodges Continous Care. Their quick thinking and knowledge of the Heimlich maneuver were instrumental in preventing a life–threatening situation from becoming fatal. I was with my mom, Gerda Zervos, while she was having lunch. She was enjoying her spaghetti when I realized that she was choking, and she couldn’t speak. I knew she was in danger, but I also realized that I wouldn’t be able to lift her out of her chair by myself. Carol and ...
