Trump His Own Worst Enemy

Editor, News-Register:

Before Nikki Haley dropped out of the Republican presidential primary, former President Donald J. Trump engaged in yet another of his incoherent rants. Trump stated that Mrs. Haley was in charge of security at the U.S. Capitol during the January 2021 insurrection, and was therefore largely at fault for the tragedies that occurred on that fateful day.

In fact, Mrs. Haley was at that time a private citizen, and disturbingly Mr. Trump had confused her with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was by no means even remotely responsible for what had occurred.

In addition, Mr. Trump bragged recently that if he had been president at the time of the American Civil War, then no such war would have taken place as he claimed that he would have "negotiated" a peaceful settlement.

Perhaps his solution would have been to allow the southern states to continue with their abhorrent practice of slavery. Disgusting.

Also, please note that Mr. Trump has recently shown obvious disrespect for his supporters by stating just prior to the Iowa caucus, when the weather was dangerously cold, "You can sit here -- even if you vote and pass away it is worth it."

Incredible.

On the campaign trail, Mr. Trump brags that it is he who is chiefly responsible for the repeal of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court, depriving women of personal control over the reproductive rights. Mr. Trump also recently has instructed his supporters apparently inadvertently not to vote and that the stock market should crash so President Biden could be compared with former President Herbert Hoover.

Finally, Mr. Trump continues to disavow the results of the 2020 presidential election in spite of all irrefutable evidence to the contrary.

I'm quite concerned Mr. Trump's pursuit to return to the presidency is essentially ego-driven and based on his personal pursuit of revenge, which should by no means be overlooked, or ignored.

The upcoming election may include consequences that could well threaten our continued existence as a democratic government and society in which what is best for their people remains top priority.
