Time To Get a Bigger Shovel

I disagree with comments made by West Virginia State Treasurer Riley Moore and GOP chairwoman Elgine McArdle at a so-called victory in unity reception.

Mr. Moore wants to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education, while Chairwoman McArdle states that the city of Wheeling needs a major overhaul, and needs to be uprooted. Whatever that means.

Mr. Moore wants to eliminate our public school system. This of course goes against the West Virginia Constitution. As an elected official, Mr. Moore is tasked with improving West Virginia. That includes our public school system.

As a member of the first graduating class of Wheeling Park high school, I am very proud of the Ohio County public school system. School boards, teachers, and other personnel have worked diligently over decades to make sure our children are receiving a first-rate education. I do not know what county Mr. Moore lives in, but he should be doing all that he can as an elected official to the betterment of public schools.

Furthermore, Mr. Moore wants to mold our laws to reflect his particular religious beliefs. No one is entitled to do that.

As for Chairwoman McArdle, I say that the roots of Wheeling have been getting stronger and deeper. We are currently witnessing an incredible amount of investment in infrastructure and building upgrades. Many entrepreneurs are seeing this positive effect and investing in the city. Wheeling's current mayor, council, and city manager are moving the city into a viable business entity, and a fantastic place in which to live and prosper.

In addition to all that the city of Wheeling is accomplishing, credit must be given to past and current Ohio county commissioners, and staff. Not long ago you had to drive to St. Clairsville or Washington to purchase most retail goods. Now, The Highlands in Ohio County is the retail powerhouse of the valley. Plans call for more development in and around the Dallas Pike area, generating additional income tax for the county and state. Thank you Ohio County Commission!

Let's not forget the impact that our recreational and entertainment businesses are having on Wheeling and Ohio County. A day rarely goes by that there is not an event at the Capitol Theatre, Wesbanco Arena, Wheeling Island Casino, Oglebay Park, and other bars and restaurants.

This is an exciting time to live and work in Ohio County and the city of Wheeling.

To wit, I would say to the GOP chairwoman, "You're going to need a bigger shovel."
