Milan Vosvick Jr. was a true pillar of the community in Elm Grove. He served for decades as the Scoutmaster for Troop 29 at Elm Grove United Methodist Church, and worked hard to make sure that anyone who wanted to participate in the troop's activities, including summer trips through neighboring states, was able to do so regardless of their financial situation.
I was fortunate enough to be a scout in that troop for several years from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, and was always impressed by his passion for the role. I still remember him driving that old church van, playing tapes of the drum and bugle corps and hitting the rumble strip to keep his navigator awake.
He required all his scouts to spend at least a week as cook if they wanted to become Eagle Scouts. While I never achieved that rank, I still remember the skills he taught me and, more than anything, his approach to life and service.
I never even knew what he did for a living, I just assumed he was a scoutmaster. But I now realize that volunteer role took many hours of dedication on top of his professional and familial duties. I'm amazed at how he did it all.
In an era where volunteerism is in decline, his memory serves as an example of the many benefits of giving back. Generations of scouts were certainly the beneficiaries of his community spirit.
He will be missed.
