As we approach Election Day this Nov. 8, I urge readers to support Laura Wakim Chapman for West Virginia Senate to represent the Northern Panhandle.
Recently, Laura's opponent has started running ads attacking her on several issues, including issues affecting women. I cannot believe that a 62-year-old man would ever feel that he has the authority to attack a woman like this and try to claim the high ground on women's issues, but that's exactly what he's attempting to do. I guess that after he spent nearly 20 years in office, her opponent is now desperately trying to get back into power. In fact, this is the second time he is running for the Senate in two years.
Apparently, some people will say anything just to win an election. Laura, on the other hand, is campaigning on the issues at hand.
Despite making up half of the state's population, out of the 34 members of the state Senate, only four of them are women. The Northern Panhandle hasn't had a woman representing it in the Senate since 1998. Female voices and perspectives are important -- and it's time that we have a strong, sincere, and smart woman like Laura in Charleston.
I don't support her just because she is a woman -- but because she has unique experiences that clearly make her the best choice in this election. She is a constitutional attorney who has fought for people's rights -- including their First and Second Amendment rights -- and she will continue that fight in Charleston. As a mother, she understands the absolute need for a strong education system and will fight for legislation to ensure our children are getting the best education possible.
She also understands the economic issues that will allow for our kids to stay here, work here, and raise their families here.
There is a stark contrast on the ballot on Nov. 8. On one hand, we have a career politician who has nothing to show after nearly two decades in office who obviously likes having the attention of having a title with his name. On the other hand, we have a young mother, one with extraordinary experiences and excellent qualifications, who would be a breath of fresh air in these highly politicized and divisive times.
I would suggest to your readers that the choice is clear -- Laura Wakim Chapman for state Senate.
