It's good to see Ohio County Schools and the Wheeling-Charleston Diocese come together for a cause, especially one as serious as with their latest collaboration.
The two organizations had two of their most visible students -- Wheeling Park High School football player Brennan Wack and Wheeling Central Catholic High School boys basketball player Eli Sancomb -- unite for a video cautioning young men about the dangers of "sextortion." It's a growing issue in this age of technology, when a teen sends someone they just met online a compromising photo, only to find out it's someone blackmailing them for more photos or money. Sextortion is an emerging problem among teenage boys.
The organization enlisted Wack -- the two-time Curt Warner Award winner as West Virginia's top high school running back -- and Sancomb -- the reigning state basketball player of the year -- not just for their popularity, but for their character.
"As I told those two kids ... no matter who you root for, everybody roots for Eli. Everybody roots for Brennan Wack," Ohio County Schools Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones said.
It's an effective communication tool, having well-known and well-respected students be the messengers for this cause. It's a legitimate concern for parents all over, and hopefully the voices of Wack and Sancomb will get through to their contemporaries.
