Get Your House Ready for Cold

2 min read

While there still might be some uncertainty as to how much snow the Ohio Valley might get from the incoming storm this weekend, one thing is for sure -- it's going to get cold. Very, very cold.

Forecasts have low temperatures in the valley falling to 0 degrees Friday, in the teens over the weekend and negative numbers on Monday. Local residents can stay indoors, bundle up and turn on a heater to keep from freezing. Their water pipes can't.

A burst water pipe in weather like what is coming this weekend can be a nightmare, and forecasts are predicting conditions that create a perfect incubator for such a malady. AAA has some tips for you to make sure that you don't fall victim to an unexpected, unpleasant surprise.

– Remove hoses from exterior faucets.

– Repair or replace weather stripping around windows and doors, vents and fans, plumbing, air conditioners and electrical and gas lines.

– Use caulk or insulation to seal all cracks, holes and other openings on exterior walls.

– Let faucets drip a little bit to prevent freezing pipes.

– Know where water shutoff valves are located so water can be turned off in case of an emergency.

– Air inside the walls, where pipes are, can be much colder than air in the room, so set the thermostat at a reasonable temperature, even if no one is home.

– Keep bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors open to let warm air circulate around the pipes.

Follow this advice, and your pipes will have a better chance of surviving the bitter cold intact.
