WEIRTON -- Now that the system is installed, second-year Weir girls' basketball coach Rick Stead can begin working on other things.
"You can definitely say that we are a young team," Stead said. "We are going to continue our efforts to push the ball up and down the floor."
The Red Riders will be led by seniors Francesca Farran and Cassidy Champ as well as juniors Bailey Stead and Daphney Tanner.
"Bailey and Fran have emerged as our leaders and it will be up to them to set the tempo for our team," the coach said. "We have two returning starters in Fran and Bailey and plenty of fresh faces to fill in the gaps."
Those fresh faces are sophomores Gia Fuscardo, Samantha Kaczmarek, Alexis Vuiller, Trezur Elmore-Sartor, Taryn Davis, Katelynn McCallister, Maddie Dilullo, Julia Gianni and Rachel Evans; and freshmen Sophia Mikula, Haley Fierro, Hannah Wenner, Lex Rowland, Sara Hudachek, Olivia Bernola, Taylor Webster and Abriana Pugh.
"This is the second year in a row where we have seen the program grow in numbers with 21 girls on the roster," Stead said. "We are very excited about our young girls. We have 17 sophomores and freshmen who are eager to learn and have played hard in the preseason.
"This group of freshmen is talented and hardworking and I wouldn't be surprised if some of them weren't playing varsity minutes by the end of the season.
"Overall this is a hardworking groups of girls. They put in a lot of time conditioning in the fall and are pushing themselves in practice to get better. I'm excited to see how the season progresses."
