Wheeling Barber Shop Taking Precautions After Reopening

WHEELING — Chad Stradwick would have preferred to wait to reopen Stradwick’s Fade Cave in Wheeling, but economic realities gave him little choice but to follow suit when barbershops, hair and nail salons and massage businesses got the go-ahead from the state to reopen in May. “If I ...

Justice’s Powers During Pandemic Questioned

CHARLESTON — While some lawmakers see Gov. Jim Justice’s use of executive powers as evenhanded during the pandemic emergency, others would like to see more legislative involvement, particularly when it comes to the $1.25 billion in federal dollars the state has received. Ever since the ...

Marshall County Schools Tech Up To The Challenge

MOUNDSVILLE — When COVID-19 struck locally in the early spring, Marshall County Schools, like most across the state and many more nationwide, struggled to come to grips with moving their curriculum online. In the weeks and months since schools closed in April, the district has shifted to remote learning — online, in many cases, but also paper packets to be completed and returned at the district’s weekly food deliveries. Much of Marshall County is heavily rural, with internet access or cell service not necessarily a given for many families. During the remote learning part of the ...

Second Person Dies of COVID-19 in Ohio County

WHEELING — A second person has died of COVID-19 in Ohio County, health officials announced Saturday. The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department did not identify the victim, but said the person had been hospitalized at the time of death. It’s the first coronavirus fatality in the county since April 13, when a 69-year-old man died of the COVID-19 disease. But Ohio County has seen a surge of new coronavirus cases over the past three weeks as the number of cases has more than doubled. The county has reported 38 new cases since Wednesday, bringing the total number to 144 since the ...

Jim Justice’s plan to used federal coronavirus relief funds for road repair sounds great in theory, but how they think they’re able to use those funds is unclear. I said last week that I would dive into this subject. As I’ve written about in these pages frequently, the state received $1.25 billion from the federal C.A.R.E.S. Act back in April from Congress (really from ourselves, as it is taxpayer dollars) to be used for state, county, and municipal expenses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There is ...

The Reopening: Barber Shops, Salons See Surge in Business

Hair cuts. Massages. Tattoos. Pedicures. Manicures. These were just some of the luxuries lost as businesses faced mandatory shutdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet as states began to reopen last month, most areas saw the resurgence of these businesses as longtime customers clamored to receive their self-care services. Take Mitch Brewer, who owns Bad Habits Barbershop in Norwalk, Ohio. Upon opening the doors to his business again, he said recently that the public’s response was something he categorized as “overwhelming.” “Our first days back were a Friday and Saturday and it ...
