Emergency personnel work alongside crews from A-1 Braden’s Towing on Monday in Elm Grove to remove several mangled vehicles from Big Wheeling Creek near the Junior Avenue Bridge. More than 20 vehicles were swept into raging waters this past weekend as deadly flash flooding struck the Wheeling area.

Unfounded postings online have claimed that local towing companies -- including one that was directly impacted by the June 14 flash flooding -- have been taking advantage of local residents. Ohio County officials are saying that’s just not true.

“We've been working around the clock -- these first responders, these towing companies have, too," said Lou Vargo, Wheeling-Ohio County EMA director. "If somebody made a clerical error in their billing, and you don't think it's right, call that towing company and they said they will correct it."

More than 70 vehicles have been recovered as part of the cleanup from the flooding -- many from local creeks. Vargo said if you have an issue, reach out to the towing company first.
