CHARLESTON -- The current governor of West Virginia has now weighed in on who he believes is the best person to be the next governor.

On Thursday night, Gov. Jim Justice released a statement endorsing Moore Capito for the Republican nomination for governor. Voters will choose the Republican nominee May 14. Capito is in a GOP field that includes current state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, current state Secretary of State Mac Warner and businessman Chris Miller.

"I have realized only one candidate is laser focused on continuing to keep us on the path of goodness for all of us," Justice said in the statement. "I think only one truly understands that we got here by pulling the rope together. Our great turnaround story still has chapters to be written, and I believe one candidate is prepared to keep the course.

"We have a great opportunity to put President (Donald) Trump back in the White House and have a unanimous Republican team from West Virginia working together in Washington. That's why it's so important to have a 'get it done' Governor who will connect the pieces to help our Great State."

Justice said Capito comes from a "family of thoroughbreds." Capito's mother Shelley Moore Capito is a United States Senator representing West Virginia. Justice is currently running for the other U.S. Senate spot coming open due to the pending retirement of Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va. Moore Capito's grandfather, Shelley Moore Capito's father, is the late former Gov. Arch Moore III.

"West Virginia deserves a team like no other that will ensure a bright future for us all," Justice said. "We will continue to build a strong economy, fight for our families, and make sure we prepare our children for the jobs that are upon us."

In a statement posted on his social media, Capito welcomed Justice's endorsement.

"Governor Justice is a leader of generational consequence," Capito wrote. "It is a true honor to have earned his endorsement. Now is the time to take us to the next level. As Governor, I look forward to working with Senator Justice to keep getting it done for West Virginia."
