2 COVID Deaths Reported in Both Ohio, Marshall Counties

Ohio and Marshall counties each reported two new COVID-related deaths Monday night.

The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department reported the deaths of one resident of a long-term care facility and one who was hospitalized at the time of their passing. The county now has reported 39 COVID-related deaths since the pandemic began.

The Marshall County Health Department reported the deaths of a 90-year-old man and a 62-year-old man, both of whom were hospitalized at the time of their passing. Marshall County has now reported 48 associated deaths since the pandemic began.

Ohio County also reported 24 new positive COVID cases, bringing its total to 2,577. Marshall County reported 55 new confirmed positive and 33 new probable cases between Dec. 24 and Monday. That county's totals are now 1,603 confirmed cases, 310 probable cases and eight hospitalizations.

The county's health department will hold free testing clinics Tuesday at three locations in Ohio County: Valley Grove Volunteer Fire Department, 355 Fire House Lane, Valley Grove; Warwood Fire Station, Station 9, 1301 Richland Ave.; and Wheeling Island Fire Station, Station 5, 11 North Wabash St.

Tuesday's clinics will last from 9-11 a.m. The free clinics are for those with or without symptoms and no insurance is needed. Participants need to bring a driver’s license, photo ID or other proof of address. There are no residency restrictions, and patients under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

All four Northern Panhandle counties were "red" on the Monday Department of Health and Human Resources COVID-19 alert map, part of a growing number of counties in the map's two highest-risk categories.

Only three counties in West Virginia's 55 — Randolph, Tucker and Calhoun — were not either "red," the map's highest-risk category, or "orange," its second highest-risk. Randolph was "green," while Tucker and Calhoun were "yellow."

West Virginia smashed its record for highest daily percent positivity on Monday, coming in at 16.39 percent.

Hancock County had an infection rate of 82.81 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 15.99. Brooke County had an infection rate of 80.74 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 15.67.

Ohio County had an infection rate of 58.30 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 10.90. Marshall County had an infection rate of 45.86 and a percent positivity of 11.43.
